Title: Way off topic, but.... Random Acts Of Kindness...
Post by: gumpy on July 18, 2006, 05:08:07 AM
Yeah, I know this isn't bus related, but some days you just have to bend the rules in order to do something nice for someone you don't know. It's called Random Acts of Kindness. Please bear with me...

I grew up in a very small community in Wyoming, and even though I haven't lived there in over 20 years, my heart is still there. So I find myself regularly visiting the town website, hoping for bits of information to tell me all's well back home.

Today, I found a short little piece on their website, written by the mother of one of the local teens. It seems that Texas Instruments has some sort of contest to design a calculator cover, and this student has entered. Now, I don't know this kid or his family, but having grown up there, I know what this dream means to this kid. The Little Snake River Valley is an isolated place, and as the song goes, "For every one who sticks around, you're either lost or you're found, there's not much in between.." fits this community perfectly. Those who are there dream of getting out, and those of us who escaped, dream of going back.

The school falls under the jurisdiction of the larger district in Rawlins, and as such often gets overlooked when it comes to technology and such. Winning this contest would mean that the school would receive 10 new graphing TI calculators. I can't express how good this kid would feel when school starts next fall and they have all these cool calculators to use in their math class thanks to him.

It looks like a long shot, but I've always supported the underdog. So I voted for this kid's design. It's a crude rendition of the globe. He drew it freehand. He didn't copy a photo like the other entrants did. He put some effort into it. It shows heart!

If any of you feel like performing a random act of kindness today, go read about it at the town's website at http://www.townofbaggs.com/id70.htm. Then follow the directions and find his design. It's called Global Calculations, blue with a green rendition of the continents, by Kale H. from Dixon, Wy, LSRV Schools. You can't miss it. To vote you have to enter your email address and a password. They email a confirmation link that you have to click on so your vote gets counted.

Thanks for indulging my moment of whimsical nostalgia.

Now back to buses....

I was just reading the contest rules. The grand prize is actually 30 TI-84 Silver Edition Graphing Calculators for the school (not 10, as I stated earlier), and the winner gets $1000 and a TI Navigator (whatever that is, probably a really nice TI calculator).  Approximate retail value over $18K USD.

For a small ranching community school, a gift like that would be HUGE!

His mother stated in her post that the money would be used for savings. Something tells me this kid will be attending college in a few years.

One more note. Growing up in this community, there were many influencial people in my life. One of the biggest was my high school math teacher (now retired). A few years ago, right after buying the bus, we were talking and he asked me how I knew how to convert a bus. He guessed correctly that it was primarily because of two people, my father, and my vo-ag / FFA advisor. He missed the third person in that lineup... himself.

From time to time I see him when we're back visiting. A couple years ago, while we were out there, he saw the bus and stopped in to chat. He was in awe, asking all kinds of questions about the conversion process, and how it drives, etc. I decided to let him see for himself what it's like to drive, so we went for a short drive to Dixon and back. The road is wide and there's little traffic.  He took it around the block to turn around and head back home, and as he drove past the local wattering hole in Dixon, some locals looked up and saw him driving this monster. Their jaws dropped they kinda just stared. He just waved at them with this big goofy grin on his face. I could tell this was truely one of the highlights of his summer!

Believe me, I can relate to this kid who has entered this contest  8)

Craig,
I spent a good part of my early years growing up in Idaho near a town of 286 people.
The first year that Iattended school there we were in a one room school house that had grades 1-8. That year district got a federal grant to build a new, modern school.
Now as I look back,of the kids in my graduating class (36 kids), 8 were killed in Vietnam, 13 have been killed in logging or farming accidents, 10 have left town, and 5 are happy being moms and dads inthe local community.
Even though it's only 30 miles from Boise, it is a backwater that offers very little in the way of incentives to young people, either in education or economic opportunity.
This is the reason I identify with and understand your quest for the youngster from your home town to have a chance at winning this contest. I will support education solely for the sake of education any time.

I also worry about our educational system today.
My wife interviews hundreds of people every week to see if the employer is elegible for a tax credit.
Many times these people she interviews cannot read or write beyond a second grade level, do not know what their social security number is, or don't have one, about 3 out of 10 (her scoring- not scientific) DO NOT KNOW THEIR BIRTHDAY! Quite a few have no idea what county they live in and don't know the difference between welfare and SSI, SSDI or Medicare.

Just think, these are the people that are growing up to run our country.

Thank God for the dumbing down of America! At least the ones that aren't running it will be too stupid to know they are going to end up as a third world nation!

OK, I put the soap box away.

Go KYLE!!!!!!!!!!

That’s the problem with this and other Countries..

Random acts of kindness are just that:  Random.

It’s a true shame when kindness, trusting, helpfulness (other than online cyber-friends), and just being polite to your fellowman become the exception—not the rule.

I have become a partial hermit because of this.
I’ve been “taken to the cleaners” so many times from trusting and promised expectations, that my “wardrobe” is cleaned, pressed and starched better than new!

My trust of new acquaintances has waned as of late—this being the reasons.

The time will eventually come when many will back on these days and wish they had tried a change- and long for the era when people communicated with each other and wern't viewed as a threat or competition towards their lifestyles-- and it will come....

It’s still nice to see something like this come to fruition—

Even if it has to be posted on a board with nothing in common with the cause, besides Craig's opening post and with the exception of the wonderful people here willing to step up and voice their say.

Vote?

Of course I did-

This is truly the only right thing to do…

Cheers..

Saratoga was one of our rivals in everything. Basketball, 4-H, FFA.  Best game I ever played was against Saratoga (not hard to remember that, my name wasn't spelled right, so I didn't have very many good games. Anyone want to see my splinter collection?  ;) )

brojcol:

Actually, you can vote for BOTH.  There is a winner from each category, Student and Teacher.  We are stuffing the ballot box for a student entry, and the American flag is a teacher entry.  By the way you are permitted to change your vote, too.  It counts the lastest vote from a particular registered user.

Also, everyone needs to realize that the person with the highest number of votes does not automatically win the Grand Prize.  The rules are written so that the top 10 vote getters (in each category) get handed over to a committee, and they select the big winner.  However all 10 do get some nice prizes, anyway.

Yeah, that was my thoughts, too. I had hoped our little busnut community would really rally around this kid, and they did for a while, but things have died down a bit. I think over 100 of you have voted, but there are 882 registered members on the board, and many unregistered (spouses, children, etc) who are also eligible to vote.

Looks like the next closest competitor is catching up. He's up to 144 (up over 20 in 3 days) and Kale is at 187 (only up 5 in the same period).

If you're not voting because you're concerned about spam, then just sign up a free email acount for this, and delete it after your vote is counted. BTW, I set up an email alias for this, and have not received any spam at all from voting here.

I think the rules say it ends Sept 29.  It's not looking good. That second place is catching up fast and once school get in session, it's likely someone from a large school will be able to get a bunch of votes from classmates. There just aren't many people in Kale's school, or the whole Little Snake River Valley, for that matter.

I hate to think we've tapped the entire busnut community already and all we could muster was about 180 volts over where he was when we started this.  The stats say we have 905 members on this board as of today.

If anyone wants a temporary email address for this, let me know. I'll set up a forwarding address on gumpydog that you can use to vote, and then can delete it later on. That way there's little chance of spam (not that I've had any problem from voting on this contest).

Yeah, as I suspected.

The others are from larger schools. Classes are probebly starting up now, and they're able to get everyone in their schools to vote for them.

Kale doesn't have many options here. There's typically only about 60 students in grades 9-12 in the LSRV High School.

Sure would like to see the rest of the bus community rally around this kid.

Hey Craig,
You mentioned in a previous post that you could get someone set up with another email for voting, I would like to do that.

i would also like to enter a possibilty of a $5+/- per person school supply fund. We could set up a paypal account with Craig as its beneficiary and if Kyle happens to lose out to the bigger schools, we could still help out the little school. We would be able probably to get at least a portion of what the main prize is.

anyway i know what it's like out there, and I would like to help in any way i can.

Devin,

I set up the address and sent you a message through it. If you get it, it must be working.

I like the idea of maybe setting up a contribution for buying calculators for the school if he should not win. Lets wait and see how the contest plays out. I think it still has about 5 weeks to run.

Well, this isn't looking too good. Kale is in third place now at 234. The leader is at 251 and climbing. This thread hasn't been active for more than a week.

Looks like maybe we've exhausted the membership of those who wished to participate.

Thanks to all those who took the time to vote. I think there are 3 more weeks left in the voting, and then, if I read the rules correctly, the final decision will be made by a panel of judges based on creativity and use of tools, so there's still a chance his design will be chosen as the final winner if he can stay in the top 10.

The grand prize is $1000 and a TI-84, and 30 TI-84s for the school.

Also, if he remains in the top 10, it appears he will receive a first prize consisting of a TI-84.

When Dallas told me about Kale, I emailed all my friends and posted on my Soap Sistah's board.  The tally is one of the first things I do every morning when I wake up. I just got in from work and checked and Kale has dropped big time in the count.  He is 4th now with 244 votes.  The new leader has 305.  We all need to get out and kick up some serious votes for him.  We are thinking of trying to do a little fund raising at the bus rally in Timmonsville using some flea sales to go to the school in Kales honor.  Cat

I just wanted to let everyone know that this is the last week to vote on Kale's design. Currently, he's in 4th place with 302 votes, and in my opinion, he's still a condender when you consider design, creativity and personal effort. It looks like there's little chance we can get him into first place, but if we can keep him in the top 10, he still has a chance at winning the grand prize as the final selection is made by a panel of judges. Even if he doesn't win the grand prize, I think he still will get a calculator for himself, as long as we keep him in the top 10.

So, for those of you who still wish to vote, you have until Friday.

Here's the direct link:  http://www.84silver.com/contest_browse_view.php?entry_id=MjEy

I hate to see the lack of concern shown by the members of this board and the BNO board.

We have a lot of members here, 984 at this time, and I'll bet that fewer than 50 have bothered to see a small town lad hit the top.

There are hundereds here who are members just so they can get something FREE, information. But ask them to  give a little bit back, and damn, it! It's just too much work and I don't care about him and I've got better things to do.

Maybe as a moderator I shouldn't say this, but, If you ever need help from me, you can wait as long as Kyle has been waiting for your vote.

Between Cat and I we have over 30 email addresses and have used everyone of them to vote for Kyle. That makes a pretty good percentage of the votes he has.

Now get off your collective behinds and DO SOMETHING!

Dallas
Your friendly moderator and all around nice guy.

Dallas,

I don't want this topic to turn into a pissin contest. It's not worth it.

I started this because I was touched by the letter his mother posted back home on the town's website. I know what it's like to grow up in a small community where the school is controlled by unknown persons 80 miles away, and there's often no regard for local needs. I also know how hard life can be there if you are not part of the "in crowd". I don't know whether Kale is part of that crowd or not, but if he's entering contests to win state of the art calculators, I bet I can guess correctly  ::)

Just as bus converting is an individual hobby, so is the desire to help others, and I understand that many folks here just aren't touched by things like this as I am. That doesn't mean they don't care or don't have passion about some other cause. I knew when I started this topic that we wouldn't get everyone to vote. That's ok with me. I was very touched by the response it did get. I was looking at the stats the other day, and this topic was one of the most read and replied to topics on the board. And, if I'm not mistaken, there wasn't one single negative response. I think that's pretty good.

I just want to offer a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who did vote. I will try to follow up on the results of the contest, and will let everyone know what the final outcome is.

While reading the news this morning, I came across this quote. I found it interesting it should appear today, after my earlier posts on this thread....

You may have heard that a 16 year old girl was shot and killed this week in a small Colorado school by an intruder. In article in USA Today http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-09-29-colorado_x.htm offers up this quote by the spokesperson for the family of young girl who was killed...

"In memory of Emily we would like everyone to go out and do random acts of kindness, random acts of love to your friends or your neighbors or your fellow students because there is no way to make sense of this," Gonzalez said. "It's what Emily would have wanted."

Well, I've used my five email addresses already. I could probably get more votes in by getting more addresses, but I'm afraid the frontrunners will just ratchet up the votes in lockstep by calling on their bigger pool of voters than Kale has.

With the contest rules, how in the world could a kid from the least-populous state ever have a chance of winning this? It frustrates me that these kids' designs are subject to a popularity contest. The top 10 will just show that they are the best self-promoters, or have called upon friends and family to do their promoting for them.

I say we just all Paypal in a few bucks each and buy Kale a nice calculator. That would be a random act of kindness. And at least I could feel like I did something other than with futility partipate in the American Idol version of HP's marketing blitz (glitz) to schools.

I'm not saying your idea to vote for Kale nor your efforts to promote his design are flawed, Craig. I'm just frustrated at the system.

Craig, I'm sorry if I came on too strong, and I apologise. To you. Not to anyone else.

During the upcoming rally in Timmonsville we are planning on having a swap meet to get rid of a bunch of stuff that needs new owners.

I am going to set up a table that is just for Kyle and I'll be puting stuff on it that will be for sale to whoever wants it. There will be no prices, no refunds and no recrimminations. This is for Kyle and his school.

The payment method will be a jar on the table to put in whatever anyone thinks something is worth. If it's more cash than a person has, We can make sure there is an ATM available. If anyone still wants a different method, Paypal is always available and we'll have at least one computer on line.

All of these proceeds I plan on sending to you, so that you can do with it what you think is best.

Also, I have a TI-81 that isn't the latest and greatest, but could be a good learning model I will contribute if it's needed.

Title: Re: Way off topic, but.... Random Acts Of Kindness...
Post by: gumpy on September 29, 2006, 09:24:35 AM
I've seen the posts regarding the sale of items and collection of funds, and have remained silent on this subject till now as I wanted to see what the thoughts of everyone esle was. I've thought about it quite a bit and thought I'd share some of my thoughts on it now....

First, it appears unlikely we'll be able to keep Kale in the top ten. Just checking the site in the last half hour, I've noticed some big changes in the votes for some of the more, shall we say subjective, designs. I suspect there are things going on with the voting that would not stand up to our moral standards, but so be it. I kind of expected this from the beginning.

Second, without keeping his design in the top ten, he has no chance of receiving even one of the first prizes (though I noticed a discrepancy in their rules in that they award a grand prize, and then 10 first prizes from the top ten, which implys the grand prize winner will also get a first prize.... anyway...).

Third, Brian, you are absolutely correct that he has no chance of competing with kids from schools like Nashua NH, Westborough, MA, Bellevue, NE (Bellevue, NE? 578 votes?  Where the heck is Bellevue, NE?? Oh, it's a suburb of Omaha. That makes sense.) and the other large city schools. That's why I promoted this to the masses of the bus community.

So, today, I did a quick check online and found that TI-84 Silver Edition calculators (which is what the first prizes are) sell for between $100 and $130 online.

What I thought I'd propose is the following. If you guys would like to set up the sale table and collect money for this project, that's great, and anyone who would like to contribute can do so also. Since I started this, I'll take the responsibility of handling the funds and purchasing and delivery of whatever we end up getting. For those who would like to contribute, funds can be sent to me. Contact me directly via email and I'll send an address. If someone wants to educate on receiving funds via paypal (funny how I've only used it to send money, not receive it), I'll make that available as well.

Then, I'll contact the school and talk to the principal and math teacher, and find out exactly what calculators they use in the school, in case they already have a baseline established (my daughter's math class specifically requested we buy a certain TI calculator). If they have no preference, we'll go for the TI-84 Silver. I suggest we try to get enough money to purchase at least one calculator for Kale, and if there's extra money, we us that money to buy more of the same to be donated to the school, or donate the remainder of the money to the school to be used in the math classroom. I expect I can convince the principal to make a presentation to Kale and keep the annonimity. Maybe we can have him present it from "a bunch of nuts".

Now, if anyone has access to purchasing these calculators at reduced prices, knows someone who knows someone who as access, etc, please let me know. In the meantime, I'll start looking around for some local prices, too, and get a better idea of online prices, etc and will update this thread as I find out more.

Also, wouldn't it be cool if we could find someone who could take Kale's design and put it on a calculator cover?  Anyone do silk screening?  Anyone at all?

A couple things I've learned since becoming involved with busnuts... first, you guys are very resourceful and second, you have good hearts.

Craig, I used to know a guy who'd take orders for stuff and low and behold he'd get it at super bargain prices, I don't know how, or where he'd get this stuff but it was always well below market value. You guys are great!

Craig, geting cash from Paypal is pretty simple if you already have an account. If you have a personal account (rather than a biz. one), those that send you cash have to have their accounts tied to bank accounts rather than credit cards. Most Paypal users do. Paypal charges a fee for each transaction, so everyone should know that part of their donation will be used to cover these fees (so YOU don't have to) . Once you get Kale's Kash  ;D collected, Paypal can either cut you a check (for more $) or wire the $ to your account (free). Then you go buy some cool stuff for the guy.

You can check with MAK and see if they'll let you set up a Donate button on this thread. It's just a little bit of code that you get from Paypal's site that you embed as an image. I could host and set up a Webpage if it's not do-able here, for whatever reason. Be happy to do it. You'll likely have an overwhelming respon$e for Kale if we can do a donate button.

Money orders and checks mailed to you are great, but a lot of folks like the convienence of Paypal. Some folks have a philosophical problem with Paypal, also, and that's fine. The point is, to find a few ways to help out this cool kid in WY, and that's what we're doing here. You never know what he might accomplish with just these little "random acts of kindness".

Craig,

SHort of silk screen, but still cool, there is a company called "Skin It"  www.skinit.com (http://www.skinit.com) that makes custom covers out of the same stuff they use to wrap busses, cars etc.  They have most cellphones and stuff like that but they also take suggestions on other devices to create templates for.

Their customer service seem pretty good also.

Brian, I like the idea of the donate button. I'll leave that up to the moderators. If they want to do it maybe you can help them with the technical issues since I'm not familiar with it. You or they can contact me if they need a the paypal account info.

I'll keep a tally of the funds, and will continue to post to this thread as it progresses.

OK, after playing around with it, I can already tell that the coding of this BBS software won't really allow a button image in this thread to be clicked (unless I'm totally missing something). But I can go ahead and host a page with the button on it. I'm going to get Craig's Paypal account linked to it... I'll keep you posted on what the moderators say about the linking. Until then, here's a non-clickable image of the Donate button I just made...

BTW, the voting on the TI designs ended yesterday. Kale didn't make the top ten. He ended up with 313 votes. The winner had 1425 votes, and 10th place had 423 votes.

BTW, the first donation was posted to my paypal account this morning. I had to set up a new account under my standard email craig@gumpydog.com. For some reason he couldn't get my original account to accept it. Also, it appears there's not way to transfer the Paypal balance to my credit card, so I'm linking a seldom used credit union checking account to paypal and will be able to move the funds where they need to be to eventually purchase the calculator(s).

I plan on calling the school on Monday to get things going there. if the donation button is available then, I'll pass the link along to them in case they wish to contribute.

Fellow Busnuts and Busnutettes,

We are up to $135. This thing is starting to catch fire.

My hope is to be able to provide a few of these same calculators to the math classroom, along with
a single calculator specifically for Kale.

I've not heard from anyone regarding silk screening his design on to covers. I looked at the skin idea, but they don't currently support the calculators, and I couldn't tell if they could accomodate your design, or if you were limited to only what they offer.

More to come...

How many covers would we be looking at?

I was just muddling around in my head and remembered that there is a guy the does a lot of custom airbrush work on a lot of different types of media, including vinyl. Would that be a viable option?

If so, I may be able to talk him into doing a few probono.

I was just muddling around in my head and remembered that there is a guy the does a lot of custom airbrush work on a lot of different types of media, including vinyl. Would that be a viable option?

If so, I may be able to talk him into doing a few probono.

I'm not sure. It will depend on the final tally of funds, but I'm hoping to be able to get enough to buy Kale a calculator, plus maybe 4 or 5 for the classroom.

Vinyl might be a viable option. I don't really know what it entails. I was thinking it would be cool if we could present the calculators in their own cases with Kale's design printed on the covers. I don't know if the calculators come with a cover or if it's extra, nor do I know what they would be made of.

Maybe you could run the idea by your friend. Even if he can't do it, he might have some suggestions for us.

I may see him sometime this week, and almost certainly next saturday.
I will be happy to run it by him and see where it leads.

Craig,

Can you post a running total of funds collected from us busnuts?   It's fun to be a part of this and see this project grow!

Best Regards, Phil

I plan to update the thread as the funds come in. Probably daily.  I'm going to leave the funds in the paypal account which is convenient to seeing the balance. Paypal has some wierd things going on and I have to wait for my next cc statement to get some number off it and enter it in the site before my account it fully authorized ???  Plus, I found out that they limit me to receiving only $500 a month unless I "upgrade" my acccount, so there may be a change in the account as the funds grow.

As of this morning, the account is at $212.97. By my thinking, that's at least 3 calculators (I haven't included my contribution yet).

Will keep you all posted...
