Title: Tracking Down PD 4104's Still Around or on the road
Post by: siberyd on March 26, 2012, 10:57:32 PM
Last month I got this crazy notion in my head and I can't shake it so I am asking for your help here. When production stopped in 1960 there were a total of 5065 PD 4104's made. How many are still around? That is my quest. I have posted this same question on 2 other bus related sites (trying to cover as many people in the know as I can).

Along the way, I will be sharing this information with all interested parties. On my spreadsheets I have the buses broken down in 3 catagories: still a bus, conversion and scrapped.  One of my spreadsheets they are listed by VIN number. The other one is tracking by information reported to me without VIN numbers.

Thanks to information I received by last Saturday my counts are at:
Still a bus: 4
Conversions: 75
Scrapped: 31
Saw a bus in a backyard......: 28

Thanks

You Tube bus is beautiful, but how many hours to bring it up to and maintain that shine. I once spent a day washing, waxing and polishing a 40 foot Crown for a bus Roadeo and didn't even get my lugnut covers that shinny. Wow, hmmm wonder what the VIN number of that one is......... :D

This is not a crazy notion at all ! I keep track of PD4501 Scenicruisers much the same way. (have been for 15+ years) You need to speak to Fred Rayman of Oklahoma City, OK. He has been keeping track of most GM buses for 30-40 years. I have PD4104-3462 (restored Tamiami Trailways seated coach) Send me a PM and I'll put you in touch with Fred. Thanks for your efforts. Take care.

Here's one that just popped up on Craigslist, located west of Atlanta. Claims to have the elusive 8 speed hydrashift transmission:

PD4104-1659
Converted...but all conversion removed and want to make it back to a seated bus.
It has never had the windows skinned over.
They are all good glass all tinted the same color and the rear glass is in new rubber
Never had a bathroom and as I recall it was a Carolina Coach new
Mechanically NEW
6-71T
Straight old gal
Open Bays no conversion stuff in them currently

Anyone have a lead on seats and overhead racks?

Now for the cool part, I just got back from delivering it to Santa Fe, NM studios for use in an A&E pilot. What a pleasure to drive, I forget...

Get to go to Las Vegas next week and drive for filming. They are bringing in 'hero buses' to haul passengers on and if mine was seated it could have been the seated bus
Curious to see what they are bringing in for the hero buses

Oh by the way my avatar is the bus with the engine getting ready to go back in...one of many times in and out

Good luck with the list

Larry

Hey! That's my old bus!     PD4104-4355

I sold her in 2001 to the Cherryholmes bluegrass group and they sold her maybe five years ago.  It looks like she has been sold again to the Woodsmen Quartet.  Glad to see she is still singing the Gospel.

I just spotted this one in Alaska down on the Kenai. It has Arizona plates and belongs to Don & Marlene. I didn't get the chance to talk to them, but it is headed down to my neck of the woods, maybe I'll get the chance later.
It is very dirty and looks like he just came up the Alcan highway.

Congrats.....you have already found more 04s than I have found 4501s in 15 years. Only know of about 230 Scenicruisers in various conditions (around 20 are still seated coaches in various states of repair). I guess that is to be expected since they made 6 times as many 04s !

Keep up the good work. Do you plan to upload your info to the net somewhere eventually? I am slowly doing an electronic version of mine at:                             [url][www.tomsgarageonline.com/url]

Thanks for the compliment. Fortunately for me, people are seeing my postings around the web at atleast 2 a week

A bus related website owner has offered my project a permanent home, for anyone to access.

PM me and I will tell you where.

There are 4 PD 4104's out there that are still operable seated coaches. Owners/locations are as follows:

Museum of St. Louis painted with a Continental Trailways livery.

Cantos Collection, Fontana, Ca - Painted for Greyhound Lines #7658 (movie bus?).

Bus stored in Williams, Ca - painted as Greyhound Lines #7103, put into storage after being filmed for a movie in 2007.

Brazil - Turismo Santa Rita #22 {may be you-tube video shinny bus}.

If anyone knows how to get VIN's for these buses, would love the help. Emails to
St. Louis and Cantos Collections (found an email address online under movie buses) have resulted in crickets.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Is this one you already have on your list? It was 6:00am when I drove by it, so I didn't ask. There are two of them at the same campground here on the Homer Spit Ak. If I can find the time, I'll as the owners of both of them.

You bet, I'll go by there tomorrow after work and see if they are still there. It is a very nice looking bus from all sides. The other 4104 at the campground is the one I posted a picture of a month ago. I'll see if he is still there also. They were both there this morning, but it is raining really hard and only 49f out, they may just pack up and bail. I sure feel like it.

Wow,

Talk about cool and pleasent weather. Today was 107f, and our local arsonist only started 2 wildfires in the forest. They stopped the fires quick. We have a great set of forestry folk.

Tomorrow should be the same with dry lightning to boot.

I just stopped by there tonight after work and the both of them were gone. Sorry! I wish I could have talked to them for you. I didn't even get the chance to look at the plates on them for you. The first bus I posted was from Arizona, but I didn't get a plate number. The green bus I posted yesterday had a extension on the rear engine doors almost identical to the Arizona bus.
Maybe someone here knows who owns them?

This is interesting that there appears to be half as many (so far discovered) 4104s in the "still a bus catagory" as 4501 Scenicruisers. (I know of about 20 seated 4501s in various conditions) Yet they produced 6 times as many 04s, and they manufactured 04s four years later than the 4501. I guess I'm glad I bought my seated 04 when I had the chance. Makes one wonder about other seated models that remain. 4106, 4107 etc. All dinosaurs really I guess.

Very few.

Hydrashift is a two speed clutch, the trans is the same.

I think it amounted to about six speeds since some of them overlapped or maybe it wasn't used on all gears - don't hold me to this though!

Re: Hydrashifts,

Hard Headed Ken probably knows how many speeds, etc... he had one of the Hydrashifts in his '04 back in the day. I wish I could find one, though I've heard that there may have been some problems because of the "wet" clutch... slippage starting out on steep inclines maybe?

I would also be interested in one of those 2-speed rears that one gentleman created. Wish I could do something like that! Not nearly brilliant enough. >:(

Thanks for the VIN, the more the merrier.

Leroy,

Been asking folks if they have a hydrashift trans, no positive results yet,  but I keep trying.

Us busnuts were an odd lot, many folks give just enough info and then seem to forget my email address.

Hope this helps!

I raise my glass to toast the best looking bus ever built - the GM PD-4104.

Ours (Tubby) is a 1959, number 4139 (anyone else notice in the tool compartment, that they used a letter "I" instead of a 1?). Fully converted,,, well it's useable if not finished.

It was delivered new to Trailways in Oklahoma City.

You can add 4104-2346 to the list. It was the first bus I converted. It was sold in 2008 and last year I received a letter from the state of Michigan that it had been abandoned. So the last place it was located was the tow co. in Clarkston Mi. I talked to them on the phone and they said they would sell it for $4-$5000.00 so I don't know where it's at now.
I also scrapped one out but I'm not positive of the vin # but I think it was 4104-4326 but can't be sure wthout the history of it.

Also on the topic of 8-speed transmissions I have a picture of one that was one of the nicest customized 4104's I've ever seen at a rally in Grand Rapids Mi in 2006. Here's a couple of links to the trans and the rally photos with the 4104 and a turbo 6-71.

Great pics, looks like years of work to make an engine and tranny look that good.

I used to do fleet inspections in my younger years, I have never seen an engine cleaner than those pics. Even new from the factory.

Saw this one with my buddy this summer in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, and I made him stop and let me take these photos, lol. I talked briefly with the owners, apparently this was being used as a smoked-meat stand and is ex-Greyhound. I think they may have mentioned the year, but I've unfortunately forgotten it. I don't have any more information however and I'm not sure if you've counted this one.

Scott,

This is one of those many buses that are out roaming the countryside that I havent found or know about yet. This is all I have records for:

4104-3151 is a 1958 coach originally sold to Western Greyhound Lines. It was one of a 124 bus order. The original fleet number would have been P-2579. Greyhound used to run these buses for 10 years then put them up for sale. Wish I had more info to give you.

That makes it a genuine hound. What city and state is this one in? So I can add it to the list of survivors.

Thanks for the serial numbers, I will update my records with your information.

My last update on coach 0008, was that it was for sale.

Had no record of coach 4822 still being alive and well.

Always happy to hear about more 4104 owners.

Got a new one for you!  ;D    1957 4104-2106   bought by Badger Bus Lines in Madison Wi.  Unit # 135.    Sold by them a long time ago, and tracked down and re-bought by them a few years ago with the intention of restoring to original. Needs a lot of work but is still a seated coach. Saw it last week when we went there hoping to find out if our 5A was part of their fleet as i was told.

Scott -

PD4104-3390 was delivered new as fleet number C-2063 in April of 1958 to Central Greyhound Lines, HQ'd in Minneapolis, MN at the time.  This was during the period when 'Hound had the enviable reputation of having the BEST preventative maintenance program of any commercial carrier, long before the hot dog salesman took over and ruined the company.  Back then they kept their buses ten years - until after the summer peak season - and then they'd be sold off to second-tier operators or private individuals.  Thus up until late 1968, this coach had good maintenance.  Once it left Greyhound's fleet, who knows. . .

If the deal goes thru as planned, you'll be able to truthfully tell folk you live in a "jen-u-wine" retired Greyhound Bus!

Yes, it was delivered new in April of 1958, according to the GMC Parlor Car Delivery Roster I have right in front of me.

Provided, of course, that you posted the correct VIN.

Some subsequent owner after Greyhound screwed up the title, and the current seller may be unaware (or may not).

If you think there will be a problem getting it registered back in Saint Louie, for a $25 donation order a copy of the GMC "Final Vehicle Record" from the Museum of Transportation in Ohio to verify it's origin w/ the DMV and insurance folk.

Not the end of the world if it's the coach you really want.

I'm planning on buying 4963 in a day or two as a parts donor.  It is currently drivable, but the clutch is going.  I'm inclined to swap parts out and keep it as a rough ugly stepsister.  It's a conversion with pretty nice exterior.  I really don't need two buses, but hate the thought of scrapping her.  Might choose to modify into an infield coach with a roof deck and on tap draft.

Are you using the serial number that is on the builders plate?
Check the serial number in the steering compartment under the drivers seat it's stamped in large letters and numbers on the vertical structure looking straight in the compartment.
If both numbers match or don't match just go with what the title states.
Don't try to unconfused the folks in you state tag and title office.
Good luck.

So far I have come across about 20 buses misregisteres if that is a word. Example: people share their VIN/Serial number and believe it is say a 1960 but the VIN says 1956.

When I share the actual manufactured year with the owner of bus and break down which vins are which model years. I get crickets or sworn at. Not very pretty.

In one case the year of manufacture was changed when the bus changed owners another after bus was rebuilt after a major accident.

Answer to inquiring minds:

PD 4104-0001 was a demonstrator bus sold to Mexico.
PD 4104-0002 was a demonstrator bus sold to Cuba.
PD 4104-0003 to 0012 wete sold to Greyhound.

4104-0008 is the oldest on.my list. A conversion
4104-5049 is the newest bus that still exists.

4104-5051 has been scrapped.

The last 5 buses off the assembly line
4104-5061 to 5065 went to Mexico.

I purchased GM PD4104-765 in 1995.
It had two previous conversions that I know about; one by Don Redon and the other by Richard L. Burton. Don purchased the bus in Lincoln, Nebraska. I purchased the bus from Don in Fresno, CA.
I have completely gutted it and have reconverted it. I have also repowered it with a mechanical 8V71TA / V730 combo, larger brake drums, Sheppard steering and much more.
RJ Long supplied the following info; Originally sold to Central Greyhound Lines of New York; hdq. in Cleveland, Ohio in Dec. 1953. Their fleet number C-1067.
It is CA DMV registered as a 1954 year model.
It's current home is in Central California.

Hi All
I just bought a 1960 PD 4104 Motorcoach conversion from a gentleman in Washington State.

The coach was converted in the late 70 early 80's.

The Vin #  PD41044817 and it has a FMCA # 23181.

Any history on this bus would be great. It has been setting for 8 years so I'm redoing things that need replacing.

I hope to have it back on the road next summer.

Thanks Allen

PD4104-960 was delivered new in March of 1954 as fleet number E-5406 to New England Greyhound Lines, HQ'd in Boston, MA.

Back then, Greyhound kept their coaches 10 years, usually selling them off in the fall after the summer season.  In this unit's case, that would have been sometime after Labor Day on 1964 when it was sold to what the industry calls a "second-tier" operator.

Off the top of my head.

5,065 made from 1953-1960.

So far I have received info on 12 still seated coaches.

At least 300 converted coaches.

Been a little lax in posting, my laptop died so I am working a lot of overtime.

And thanks to requests on 6 websites, I get a new VIN every month.

With holidays coming will post more.

So there are currently only 312 known to be in existence? Would this make our buses worth more as a rare collectors model?

Older Eagles and MCI's will become rarer than GMC's because they'll rust away to just a few left. For 4104's to be rare, there would need to be only a few left. Probably a better chance on a scenicruiser or MC-6.

G -

PD4104-4556 was delivered new as fleet number C-2378 in March of 1960 to Central-Southwestern Greyhound Lines, HQ'd in Minneapolis, MN.  PO probably purchased from 'Hound in the fall of 1970 or so after the summer peak season, as GL normally keeps equipment 10 years before selling them off.

As a side note, if you want to experience overheating that 6-71 while living in the Southwest, then leave that mudflap hanging off the rear bumper.

If you don't want to experience overheating, then pull it off and rehang it on the bulkhead directly behind the rear axle.  That's where they were installed as OEM - it helps to create a low-pressure area under the engine to help draw more air thru the radiator and engine compartment.  This is one item that you shouldn't second-guess the factory about.

For some folk, shifting the manual four-speed is a piece of cake, for others, their worst nightmare.  It's a "crash box," so you have to double-clutch for best results.  This article may be of help:

We are visiting my Wife's moms cousin this night.  Her husband (Jimmy Ace Asip) is the lead singer for a band called "Pieces of Eight".  They are a southern beach style "shag" type band from the late 50s, early 60's (and they still play 5 or 6 dates a year).

When we pulled up to their house in our bus he was excited to see it and told me all kinds of stories of the bus they drove around back in the 50s and 60s when they would tour. He said that they mostly used the bus to drive around and would stay in hotels.  There were 12 original grayhound seats in the front, 8 bunks in the middle and a card table and u-shaped couch in the back.  Not much of a conversion but it was mostly for travel and all the band members would take shifts driving to get from one place to another.

The picture came out of a book called "The Heeey Baby Beach Days of Music" by Greg Haynes.  There is also a picture of the bus on their website http://www.thepiecesofeight.com/ on the history tab.  Unfortunately the website is all flash so the picture is not saveable sans a screen shot.

I'm trying to get him to dig up more pics of the bus.  It was a grayhound bus before they bought it.  The 4 numbers up on the top are 5638.  I'm sure this is a Greyhound bus number that was never removed and is probably not the serial number.  He said about a year or two ago someone saw it on the side of the road (probably a scrap yard) recognized the band and bus from back in the day and called him and told him that they saw the bus.  He doesn't know anything except that it was in the Charlotte area and still had the same paint as in this picture.

If I find out more Ill let you know.  Maybe RJ can find out something about it from the Greyhound repository.  ;)

Maybe RJ can find out something about it from the Greyhound repository.

Well, yes & no. . .

I don't show 5638 as a number assigned to a 4104 by one of the Greyhound ("e" not "a") divisions when new.  The closest I come is 5445 belonging to Pennsylvania GL, then 5700 @ Northland GL.

It isn't unusual to GL to reassign coach numbers when the fleet is repositioned.  All you have to do is look at the Scenics - some had 4/5 different fleet numbers during their Hound career.  Add to that mix the consolidation of various divisions over the years, and tracking becomes much more of a challenge.

However, it definitely is an ex-GL car.  Give-aways are the low-mount driver's mirror, the fleet number placement, the running dog breastplate, and the large flat panel between the headlights for multiple state license plates.

Now if Mr Asip or one of the other band members can come up with an old vehicle registration or similar with the VIN, then I can come up with which GL division originally purchased the coach from GM.

1955 PD 4104-1522 has moved to her new home  from Lincoln, Montana where she was purchased to Saratoga Springs, NY.

This coach has an interesting history.  It was originally purchased in May of 1955 as fleet number A-5509 by American Buslines, HQ'd in Lincoln, NE.  American was the third (and smallest) of the transcontinental bus companies back then, behind Hound and Trailways.  Of course, they're just a memory now. . .

Jon -

"Cloud backup" is basically a back-up service that encrypts and stores your data out in cyberspace somewhere, so if your system crashes, you can restore everything w/o losing anything.

My brother-in-law, a very high-level program manager at Intel, uses a product called "Crashplan," which is the same product Intel uses for all it's laptops throughout the company.  I figure if it's good enough for Intel, it's good enough for me.  Very reasonable monthly rates, too.

There are other plans out there such as Carbonite, iDrive and Mozy, choose what's best for you.

You hit the nail on the head. This 5636 fleet number that appears on the bus in the old photo was probably the very last number assigned to the 4104 (by GH). If you knew the year the photo was taken, or more of the original (particular period livery) was left intact, you could guess which serial you were dealing with based on the fleet number. As you said, we do this all the time with deciphering old photos of Scenicruisers. Scenics and 04s, and others, may have had beween 3-6 different fleet numbers (depending on division moves, and legth of service). Some remained the same throughout. (not many) As you know, Scenics were the expection to the 10 year rule-of-thumb service life for GH. Some went through 5 paint schemes and 20 years of service. I am very lucky to have two different photos of my PD4501-771 while in GH service. One shot in 1964 by Fred Rayman in Iowa (no surprise!), and one shot by Jim Husing in San Fran in 1977 (SF was the dumping ground for Scenics to die!) You have to look at every single fleet number in your roster to see if that one pops-up. With 04s....thats a lot of numbers. My eyes bleed, just thinking about it!

They're are a few numbers that will not appear on your roster. That old Motorbus Society list does have some errors and ommisions. But....It's all we have! Take care

John,

No I did not know about this bus, I will try and make contact with them. It'd a good
looking bus. I was in contact with another full time couple in Mexico last year. But there 04 was a 1953 I think.

We will probably bring our skoolie to BGW. But since we live close to the event, maybe accept a short field trip to check out the 4104. Replaced start batteries with AGM's earlier this year. But still have a few things to get done before I take her out in public. Replacing subfloor in house for Christmas break.

No time to work on 04. The skoolie is on the road 3 times a month for dog adoption events.  Twice a month in Orange County.

A little too cold right now to work on it, but I have gutted the previous conversion from the 80's.( way too much shag carpeting for me) I would start with insulating the bus from the ceiling down, the insulation there now looks original as well as the ceiling panels and looks like it gets wet from condensation, would like to know the best material to use against the metal surfaces , by the way I hope I can get a lot of feed back from members willing to give advice as I go, I will try to post pictures too. Nel -

PD4104-4519 was delivered new as fleet number P-7541 to Western Greyhound Lines, HQ'd in San Francisco, CA.  It was part of a 75-bus order that was delivered in February and March of 1960.  Based on it's sequence in the order (4478-4553), I'm going to guess that it actually was delivered in the early part of March, as it was #41 out of 75.

So you can legitimately tell folk that you own a "Jen-u-wine retired Greyhound bus."   ;D

FYI, if you haven't seen it in some of my other postings, WGL had one of the BEST maintenance shops in the Greyhound organization during the timeframe your coach was part of their fleet (1960-1970), so for at least the first ten years of it's life it was well taken care of.

Greetings all,

I have to apologize for the last total I posted. The numbers did not match in 2 places (my way of double checking). It appears that I have a mystery formula adding buses that don't exist in my database. I found an error on Line 2215.of 5100 lines (on my Excel spreadsheet). Somehow a formula was adding buses to my total. I guess it can happen, because it did. So I spent my weekend looking at every line and found the error.

The corrected numbers for the surviving coaches are:
(These do not include new numbers received over the weekend).

Conversions - 202
Noted on web - 33
Scrapped - 50
Still a bus/shell - 16

Total of 301

2 owners are converting their coaches to being a bus again.

This week I have been helping a 4104 fan in Brazil.  Our 4104's are very popular with collectors there. The shine them up like mirrors including the engine. So I have 4 serial numbers to the still a bus list with another 2. I have their fleet number and company name. Unfortunately when GM exported vehicles, most of the time the notation on the delivery list is export.

So there are a total of 6 buses in Brazil, originally I only knew of 1. The famous one from the Youtube video. Seems the goal is to make all of them like that. Last year 2 were bought by collectors and shipped south.

Talked to Max, the owner of the bus. It's a1954, basically a shell with 2 roof top A/C's.  He replaced the water pump and cored out the radiator.  Has owned it for 12 years and has never got around to doing the interior. He is working in California this week and will get me the serial number when he gets a chance. Bus is $5k or best offer. He said it runs great.

The headlight/taillight conversion on the Duluth 04 was probably done while in revenue service with GH or alike. GH did the same conversion to several Scenics as well.

On a field trip today with my notes, so here is an update:

Converted coaches 205
Noted on web.            33
Scrapped.                    55  I know this number is much higher.
Still a bus/shell.         21

For the number crunchers in the group:

1953 GM made 773 - 4104's,   at least 33 survive
1954 GM made 527 buses, at least 11 survive
1955 GM made 265 buses, at least 13 survive
1956 GM made 400 buses, at least 21 survive
1957 GM made 1105 buses, at least 43 survive
1958 GM made  796 buses,  at least 32 survive
1959 GM made  489 buses, at least 31 survive
1960 GM made.  711 buses, at least 42 survive

I wrote an article for BCM on this search.  Watch for it.

Tom,

Here is what my notes say:

25 coaches in the still a bus file.

3 are shells at last owner contact.

That leaves 22 buses seated.

Of those 22, there are at least 5 in South America.
My contacts in Latin America say there may be more in Central America. Dont have any contacts there yet.

So 17 seated 4104s in USA so far. Any of those in Canada? That is not many for sure. I have about 25 seated Scenics on my list. Sad news for 4104s, as there were 6 times as many 04s made than 4501s. Maybe your numbers will increase with time. I find in most years I get only about 2-3 new 4501 serial numbers (over the 15 years that I have been counting). That probably does not begin to keep pace with the number that are scrapped every year. I just heard about another Scenic that was scrapped recently somewhere in AZ. (only sketchy details so far) I'm sure at some point I will stop getting any new numbers added.

Keep up the good work.  Take care

Tom

I just spent a couple of days in Tyler, TX, working with my father to get #3354 back on the road.  The interior was fully converted to an RV sometime in the early 80s, and was used by my family for vacations throughout the 80s and 90s.

It has been off the road for the past six years, but it was working fine when it was parked.  Right now it is waiting for a mechanic to deal with a stuck injector (and hopefully replace the rack with a breakway model, if we can find one).  Once he has given the whole thing a thorough inspection, the plan is to move it to Northern California.

I'm hoping to find somewhere in the East Bay to park it.. I live in Berkeley but it's going to be impractical to keep it in the driveway.  Initially I'm going to see if I can leave it at NIMBY for a couple of months, but that will only work as long as I am actively working on it.

May has been a very busy month for both me and the list. For me the end of the school year (May 29th)
meant a lot of field trips to Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm = overtime.

For the list, I am still sorting out the info.
At least 2 buses on the list have changed owners.
About 4 or 6 new buses to add to the list.
When someone calls me on the phone about my ad in BCM, I dont always have my list hand and jot info on that scratch piece of paper......

Aiming for an update this week.

There's the 3 Scenics in Gila Bend Arizona. I also saw 4 in Wyoming while I was passing through when I bought my bus back to Connecticut. Did not have time to stop, 3 where at a farm along I80 and could be seen from I80 in the distance and another was along I80 same state. Maybe someone knows of these sorry I cannot provide more exact location's

The ones in Wyoming were all Scenics but as I was driving I was not able to keep track of any towns. I do know it was a wide open area and you could see the farm with the Scenics parked next to the house. Looked like they may have been using them for storage. The other was close to the road beside a gas station. Sorry I probably should have taken better info. This was while traveling east on I80 farm on the right, gas station on the left.

Vern,

The list has been offered a home on 3 sites, its still in my brain, in 3 notebooks and a thumb dropped. The hardest part of my hobby project is making time to log it all down. One spreadsheet has 5,100 lines to fit
the original delivery list of all 5,065 buses made. Then I have a list of still a bus, converted and scrapped
Plus pictures. If the river dont rise to much. Will have something available for viewing in December.

But I am an oprrations guy & bus driver by trade. I have no clue how to take it to the next level. I know there is an interest in 4104's. Just look at the viewings on this subject line.

I have an IT background and can help with that kind of stuff.  I could build a web based application with a database backend that would work for the list.

Are there any 4104 specific sites?  If not would there be interest in starting one?  I would be happy to set one up if there is enough interest.  A place to collect information, with a forum, picture gallery, etc.

Hi, we just picked bought 2754 that was listed on craigslist in Monterey. It has a recent conversion. As far as I can tell it was delivered to southeastern greyhound in 1957. And before being currently registered in California it was registered in Florida, and Tennessee before that.

Welcome aboard! Sounds like you got a serious upgrade from the SUV and old travel trailer. It will feel like luxury. Now don't spend all your fuel money on repairs.  ;D

Beautiful coach all the way around. Has an 8 speed hydro-shift transmission. This is one of the few with that special transmission.  I sent him an email as usual requesting his serial number. Paws crossed.

No parts or anything can be sold or removed due to insurance restrictions.  Not for sale.  Am trying to figure out a workaround for that particular problem.  I am not even supposed to know that the bus is there.

John,

Thanks for the serial number and location for the list.

Speaking of the list, I am changing the way, I am tracking the buses in the database. Been using Excel as my primary spreadsheet. A guy at work has created an Acess supported database.

So I am in the process of re-entering the 300+ buses.

Then with Mung's help and a couple others we will have the list posted for all to enjoy and have for reference.

You shouldn't have to re-enter them, you should be able to import the excel into access.  But either way, once you have it in access, I can easily take that database and put it on a searchable web page.

I have no idea where it came from, and I have never seen it before, and it certainly can't be the same one that was mentioned before, but a bus will appear at the storage yard tomorrow.   Certainly not the one that was scheduled to be scrapped because that one must have been scrapped cause it certainly isn't at the scrap yard anymore.  Am I making myself perfectly clear?

4104-2948 is alive and well as a seated coach in Ohio. The gentlemen purchased it from a church in Florida that has owned it for the past 35 years. His intent is to leave it as a seated coach. They filmed Shawshank Redemption in his town. His other bus is the Ford/Bluebird bus used in the opening scene of the movie.

I just picked up 4104-3247. I'm guessing it was converted in the eighties. Originally delivered to western greyhound in 1958. I can see where the old greyhound lines decals used to be down the sides and on the bay door which says Chicago greyhound lines llc.  If you have any additional info on my bus please let me know.  The bus is now in Sidney B.C.

Thanks.

Carlito's

Congratulations and welcome to the crazy world of bus ownership. 4104-3247 was part of a 125 bus purchased 1958 by Western Greyhound Lines based in San Francisco, CA.

Traditionally Greyhound Lines would sell off their coaches at the 10 year mark at the end of summer. Then a smaller charter companies would buy them and hold them for an average of 10 years.

I will be checking my records on any info on your coach. I will also be sending you some 4104 related links.

Carlito's,

List is not yet posted, have approximately 300-350 coaches on the list. My Excel file got a gliitch in it and.I am rebuilding it in Access. Coaches are tracked by Still a bus, conversion and scrapped in an attempt to track most of the 5,065 coaches originally made.

Soon as I get them together, the list will be posted online. I have 4 groups offering it an online home.
Info on list that will be available for viewing by public from list will be:
Year
serial number
original owner
original fleet number
current status - bus, converted or scrapped
date added to list
owner
location:  City, State/Province,  Country
Notes: example - mine has factory installed skylights

The.skylights brighten up the coach something else. Basically the front half of the coach has them. It was an option ftom the factory.  Yosemite Park and Curry Company (my coach's original owner) ordered 4 coaches with them. Vermont Transit ordered 6 coaches with them. Don't know if there are any others that came with them. A lot of Scenicruisers came with that option too.

I am curious if your skylights are single pane glass, or thermopane? Skylights were standard on Scenics. From our research, it looks lile the first 500 Scenics had single pane glass thoughout, then the next batch had thermopane. Are your skylights slightly curved too? I wonder if they are the same as 4501.

The glass follows the the curved roof line, so I am leaning toward the glass being curved. There are 3 panels. 1st one behind the driver and last one in the center.of the coach (above the kitchen).

Yes I have this one on the list. I am just amazed that.no one has bought his coach yet. 8,500 miles on a rebuilt engine. I know he wanted 60k for it a couple years back and has come down to the current price.
An ex-Trailways coach with placards on both sides.

I am seeing a trend. Coming about  with prices going up on bus conversions across the board, maybe he will sell it this year.

I wanted to go to the museum to learn more history, and then saw this in a pamphlet in the hotel.  Unfortunately I am here on business, and the museum closes at 4 and I won't be able to get there this trip.  Maybe someone else in the area can check it out who is nearby.  From the picture, it looks like the whole bus may be in there!

Thanks for the info, I did not know about this museum. I have submited a contact request on their website. But I am learning more and more the PD 4104's made a mark in Civil Rights movement . In fact the 4104 that starred in The Shawshank Redemption and Selma  is now owned by The National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture at Alabama State University in Montgomery, AL.  I was contacted by them earlier this week looking for a place that can make repairs to their bus.

Pabusnut and everyone else,

From a bit of info, sometimes you get a lot.

About 30 years ago a bus company sold the front 1/3 of an old Trailways PD 4104-2023  to the Civil rights museum.  The museum then did a controlled burn on that body of the bus to make it look right for the display. Afterwards they painted it in Greyhound colors for their Freedom Riders display. I have photos but they are the wrong format to be posted here. If you want to see what the front 1/3  of the 4104 looks like before and after, shoot me an email.

If you are in the dark about what the Freedom Riders were here is a link, I was born in 1959 and did not ever hear about this, until I started this 4104 project.

  Hi Jon

I have been communicating with a fellow who lives in Puerto Rico. He bought Fred and I's Scenicruiser book, and sent me a nice letter through the publisher. We have been talking; first by letters, and more recently via email. I am not sure if he speaks English, but I'm guessing he does, as his hand writting is beautiful. His favorite coach is the GM 4104s. So I asked him if he knew of any around his area. He sent me the following info about one at this location:

Autobuses De Puerto Rico Inc. Carolina,PR   ph#787-701-3605 (I'm guessing a repair outfit or salvage yard). He will be sending me photos of the bus soon. So if you have a spanish speaking friend, you could probably call down there, and get the serial number. I'll bet lots of 04s went to Cuba, PR, South America, Mexico, and elsewhere. Take care

Tom

I can't remember if I've reported mine for your list.

We purchased PD4104-1553 in Rathdrum, ID, in May I think. It's a 1955 model.

It has the one-piece door and driver's windows, except for the inset toll/ticket window. It has a full set of windows, though they look like the glass has been shuffled around. One even has a bullet hole... The escape door is intact and functional.

It's been converted to an RV and completely remodeled at least once. We're going to do it again. We have some fun plans in store for it.

It was never a 'hound or Trailways bus. It was purchased new by Indian Trails Bus Company in 1955 as coach 106. At the time, Indian Trails named all of their coaches after Michigan native American chiefs. I have a call in to them trying to find out who ours was named after.

and finally, a plea for help:
The accelerator cable is frozen in the housing, so we can't drive it. I've tried various penetrating oils at each end, to no avail. I've tried a slide hammer on the back end (after disassembling the cable ends) and all I've managed to do is shorten the cable.

Does anyone know how get the inner cable out of the housing when it's this stuck? I've inspected almost the entire length of the housing, and it's not crushed or bent anywhere I can see. It has to be corrosion or a dirty cable.

My next step will be to apply heat to the ends of the housing in the hopes that it's solidified grease holding it up. I'll try a better clamp on the inner cable and constant tension instead of the slide hammer. Other than that, I'm out of ideas. If it doesn't work I'll probably have to run a completely new cable parallel to the original one.

Worth a try. Check with motorcycle repair shops they have a fitting that goes on a motorcycle cable to lube. Maybe modified and a little more pressure you can put some fresh kerosene or penetrating oil  through it

Chessie,

The green bus in the video is 4104--4196. It lives in a temperature controlled garage and has 2 detailers polishing it when not on the road. Another 4104 seen on YouTube is Turismo Santa Rita 4104-1916. This coach is actually used on request for charters.

PD 4104's are very popular in South America. There are currently 10-15 buses in private collections or in storage in Brazil alone. Uraguay has several running around, and yes I have a bus guy trying to track down those serial numbers for me.

Hi Jon,

I just got back from a month in Mexico, and when in Aguascalientes I saw what seemed to be a 4104 in the bus station there.   I only briefly saw it while driving by, and I couldn't go back to get a better look, but it had a three-piece rear window with the wide central glass and two narrow side flanking pieces.   Are there any other buses that used this same rear window design?   I find it hard to believe that a half-century old bus could still be in revenue service, even in MX.   Most of the other local and second-class services there are handled by older Mercedes-Benz and Dina buses, including some displaced from earlier first-class services that now have modern MAN, Volvo and Scania buses, so an old 4104 (if that is what it was) is a rarity indeed.   However, anything's possible  -  I saw an old two-axle Sultana in local service in Huatusco, and there are still some Detroit-powered Dinas and others trundling their sonorous way around the rural backroads far from the big cities.

Have you heard of any 4104s in service in Mexico?

John

PS  -  will you be at Paul's for BGW VIII this coming Mem Day?

a 04.

they just keep on rolling along

John,

Yes to BGM, and yes it is possible that an 04 is still in service down there. I have heard that there were 2 hauling folks around different villages.

I know of 2 conversions in trailer parks and 2 in private collections. I have serial numbers for the 2 in the trailer parks and 1 privately owned coach. Each of the elusive 04's that have been spotted at bus terminals, escape from view before the contact can take another look or stop and check it out.

Your's my friend is the 4th sighting of one of 2 rumored to be in service.

Do you know where the other possible sightings were?   If some of the others were near Aguascalientes, you may have a positive lead on an actual 4104 still in service there.

A few years ago I saw an Eagle in revenue service at Tijuana's Central Camionera, so anything's possible!

Do you have any possible converted 4104s near Novato CA?   On one of the rural roads west of Novato just beyond the golf course there is what appears to be an old GM in a small farm next to the road, complete with A/C on the roof.   It's always been there every time I've driven by  -  next time I'm up there I'll try to get a better look at it.

I used to see what looked like a 4104 just off the I-5 when driving south, somewhere near Carlsbad or Solana Beach, parked on a hillside near some houses among the eucalyptus trees, but the last few times I've driven I-5 South I haven't seen it.   I wonder if it's one of the ex-SD buses?

Dateline  -  Aguascalientes, Mexico

I've got some more info about the elusive 4104 that I saw last year at the bus station here, apparently still in service.   A few days ago I took the Primera Plus service from here to Mexico City, and while waiting to get my bag of food and goodies before boarding I asked some Primera Plus staff about the 'muy viejo camión GM Americano'.   Amazingly one of them knew of it, and he said he thinks it runs only during the annual fair here, the Feria de San Marcos (maybe the largest fair in North America), possibly as a relief service to one of the smaller towns near here.   He said he's not seen it at any other time except then.   Unfortunately I'll be gone from here before the fair starts this year, so there's no chance of my finding out more for now  -  last year I was here during the fair, hence my sighting of it.   If I could ride it to wherever it goes, wouldn't that be fun to be in a 60 years old GM still in revenue service?   I saw an Eagle at Tijuana's Central Camionera a few years ago, still in service and sounding good with its 8V71.   Who knows what other gems are still in service here?   I did see a complete-looking DINA Olimpico in a truck junkyard here, so if anyone's looking for one you know where to go!

I'm off to Tampico tomorrow for a few days, so I'll keep my eyes open for anything else interesting.

Juan

Thanks for the recent Scenicruiser S/N referral. Owner and I have been talking. I had lost track of that one since 2007. Great to know it is still around.

Tom, I was happy to connect the 2 of.you. A seated Scenicruiser has got to be a rare gem nowadays.

S/N 3065 just bought in Naples, FL by Adrian of Sarasota, FL. He already owns a Scenicruiser. Installed batteries, changed some tires, fired right up. Considering driving home the 126 miles, or maybe Landoll. Update photos and video over on Bus Grease Monkey site. Another great save!

You may already have these ones down but this ad is for one PD 4104 and says they have two 4104's for parts for a potential total of 3 new additions to your list. Hope this helps, apologies if it is a redundancy!

It says Chapel Hill NC -- two miles from my fiancee's house.  If an eyeball needs to be put on it, that eyeball could be mine.  Let me know.

Take care

I have 10 new coaches to add to the list this week including the bus formally know as Savitar. Cartop has been removed, interior gutted and is being converted into a mobile clothing store. This coach is currently residing in Oxnard, CA.

Howdy,
I'm new to the forum.
I have a 1957 PD 4104- #2818.
As far as I know she was fully converted to an RV in Utah, then sold and converted with some vintage seating to a 'Bustaurant' named 'Diamond Lil' working in California.  She is currently mine, and I have listed her for sale in the classifieds.  She is such a gem, but I probably should have checked with my hubby before bringing her home.   :D
She runs well, has had recent work, and is still in SF Bay Area.
Thanks so much for keeping track of all these beautiful busses.
