Title: GMC Greyhound Scenicruiser PD4501-805 for sale on ebay
Post by: pd4501-771 on January 17, 2013, 09:07:14 AM
I just listed a Scenicruiser (PD4501-805) on ebay for my friend Tom Bojan (Chicago).  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Classic-1956-GMC-Greyhound-Scenicruiser-bus-PD4501-805-NO-RESERVE-PRICE-/200880752919?_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&forcev4exp=true  (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Classic-1956-GMC-Greyhound-Scenicruiser-bus-PD4501-805-NO-RESERVE-PRICE-/200880752919?_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&forcev4exp=true) He saved this conversion shell from the scarp-man in Connecticut back in 2009. He had it hauled to his place near Chicago. Unfortunately, he does not have the time to finish the project. It has tons of potential! I am tempted to buy it myself, but I already have 4 antique buses! We both want to find a good home for this historic coach. Very low, NO RESERVE starting price. Please pass along to anyone you feel may be interested. Letís try to save another one !

It will be interesting to see what this bus actually sells for. There was a recent thread about the value of antique buses and some thought they are valuable. This will be a real test of that idea. I hope the auction goes well for the seller's sake.

Good luck, Sam

Wow! That is going to need allot of work, but for the right person willing to put in the money and time, it may be a good deal.

I would love a Scenic!   That's my dream RV.  I would have to start completely over.  Maybe some day.

Looks like the eBay market has spoken on this one. Went for less that I thought it would.

It went cheaper than I had hoped for the owner's sake. I have not heard from the high bidder yet. I hope he comes through, so I don't have to end up with this dam thing. I want it saved....but I need another bus like a hole in my head! I'll keep you guys posted.

Clifford

Thanks for the heads-up. Bummer. Do you know what part of the country it was scrapped? I knew of one a few months (maybe more) that was crushed in Pheonix. I appreciate you asking about S/N. Take care

It's a shame that 4501s are still being scrapped.  Are they not worth more to enthusiasts than they are for metal?

They are only worth what someone is willing to pay! Bitter owners/sellers, who have spent way too much time and money over a long period of time usually have only one thing in mind....getting a portion of their investment back anyway possible. Unfortunately, owners also sometimes have a very misinformed idea about the scrap value of an old bus. We probably all have heard someone say "heck it's worth $10K in just aluminum scrap". Yeah right! But sometimes, we truly are in competition with the scrap-man. When prices are up on aluminum, etc. it makes it tough to rationalize saving a real clunker. If we know about a particular one in danger of being scrapped, usually we can save it. It's the ones we don't know about until it's too late that are so disappointing. The internet certainly helps with awareness, but she is still one great big country, and these old things are still out there hiding.

The real problems start when you loose your storage. If the city or county CODES ENFORCEMENT OFFICE decides "you can't store that here", you don't get much time to comply with their edict.
If it aint 'road ready', good luck finding a place that will let you tow a bus into their storage lot.

I have heard people say that "they" can't make you move it. However, after having been there & done that, twice, I can assure you that they can make you want to move them just to stem the flow of cash that is required to fight 'them'.

The fact is that they can have them hauled off & you will have to pay the bill. Sure, you can fight it, but it will involve lawyers - & we all know they require lots of cash.
Then, if you are lucky enough to get a jury trial, good luck finding 12 unbiased people who don't already want it moved! The best result would likely be that you won't have to pay, but good luck getting reimbursed for the loss.

Not many are able to afford enclosed storage - which is the best way to avoid the drama.

Bottom line is it is very likely that the scrap man will be the only one you can find that will actually take it off your hands right away, sad, very sad.

BTW, The scrap man has been known to quote much higher prices over the phone - only to lower the price drastically when you show up with it, figures you won't take it back after you have already incurred the expense of moving it. . . .
