Title: Blytheville rally
Post by: Ed Hackenbruch on March 30, 2013, 12:54:20 PM
Just got here, where is everybody!!!! ;D  There are 2 rv parks here, the one we are in is about 200 yards south of the staging area on the west side. Nothing fancy, kind of run down but they do have 30 & 50 amp plus sewer and water for $25 a night or $12.50 if you have passport america.  Gonna take a quick run to the other one which is 2 miles south of here but from what i have heard it makes this place look like the Hilton!

Hey Ed, just got into Jackson, TN about 100 miles from you.  Checked into a dumpy campground to wash the bus, but it's raining.  Guess I'll head your way tomorrow.  Is there a hose bib at the staging area??

Just got off of the phone with Mark before getting on here. :)  The other rv park is about 2 & 1/2  miles from here and looks a lot better than i expected, even better than here. Didn't stop and ask about the price.  Went to the Depot but looked like they were set up for either a wedding reception or something for Easter so we did not go in.  Town is a lot bigger than i thought, main street has some strange jogs in it. There are some really nice houses in some areas and some really bad houses in other parts. Quite the mix of things.

Mark, just got back from checking for faucets at the buildings. Only found one and there is no water. They must have shut it off when they closed up the buildings.

We will be there on Thursday afternoon, I think about the best area RV Park is a KOA about 20 miles north...just across the Missouri State line. We will probably be staying there as I really need electrical, my generator is the next thing on my list to replace. Got lots to do between now and departing. Looks like the weather should be OK next week.

  Looking forward to it...

Wonder why the City of Blytheville didn't allow parking on the lake ?

Post by: Emcemv on March 30, 2013, 07:38:29 PM
We will be heading out on Monday, hope to be in Blytheville on Wed late afternoon. Still have a few more things to do on the bus tomorrow. Changed the oil and rebuilt the air dryer today, got to wash it and sanitize/fill the water tank tomorrow. First night at a Walmart in Winchester VA, second night in a campground outside of Knoxville TN. Can't wait to meet everyone!!!

Post by: Ed Hackenbruch on March 31, 2013, 02:38:48 AM
RJ, already talked to Jim a couple of weeks ago about helping with the parking. :)   Clifford, parking on the lake? What is the story on that? Saw the lake on google earth, haven't been there yet.   Emcemv,  Mark washed his bus, 45 miles later he was in the rain....We ran in the rain for about 260 miles yesterday, it started raining friday nite just after we got over the Arkansas state line and is still raining although it is nothing like it was yesterday. Have seen more rain in the last 2 days than i have seen in the last year or two! Figured if i had any leaks in the bus they would show up and i was right! I think the seal at the bottom of my windshield is leaking a little. Think that the wind was forcing water up underneath it, didn't even know it until after we got here and noticed the dash covering was damp.

Title: Re: Blytheville rally
Post by: Emcemv on March 31, 2013, 07:16:21 AM
Ed, we are hoping for not too much rain, we need a new windshield gasket and it leaks a bit onto the dash.....

I'm going to wash it before we go and it is what it is when we get there! Honestly, with all that I've been doing to the bus before we go, I will just be happy to get there in one piece!!

Quick update,  Mark Renner got here and so did Jim and Pat Shepherd so the pre-rally rally is now on!  Also the rv park owner said that he will give the half off rate to anyone that wants to pull in here. Paper has a front page story about the rally.  ;D

Post by: rv_safetyman on March 31, 2013, 07:25:21 PM
Well, as Ed noted, we are here in Blytheville (pronounced Blyville).  One of the folks Tom has been working with stopped by the staging area and offered to give us a tour of the Greyhound terminal.  While there is more work to be done, it is a great restoration.

I wanted to make some comments on fuel prices for those traveling east on I70 or south on I55.  In Colorado the fuel was about $3.75.  As soon as we got in Kansas, it jumped to $3.89.  In Missouri almost all the stations had diesel for $3.69.

If you are traveling south on I55 out of St Louis, at mile marker 178 there "Quick Trip" truck stop that has diesel for $3.59 (cash or credit).  Easy off and on and nice folks.

As we got closer to Arkansas the prices got close to $4.00.

Look forward to seeing all the neat buses (and owners ;D)

Jim

After looking over the area around the station where we will be parking, i would like to let everyone coming know that it will probably be a slow process. Some will be parked on the streets and some in parking lots and it will take some time to get everybody in place without jamming things up. From what we have heard so far the people are really looking forward to having this event and are really going all out to make sure we have a good time. Hopefully things will go smoothly and they will have enjoyed our visit as much as us.

Yes, as expected parking will take cooperation and patience. But it should go fine. Thanks for snagging me a paper. I am somewhat of a pack-rat, and like to save stuff like that (really? a guy with four buses, and ump-teen old cars is a packrat....go figure!) Jack, we'll miss you buddy. We'll be thinking about you. Take care. Thanks Clifford! If you guys need anything at all, before I get there, just go see Megan at the GH depot, or L.C., her counterpart, they will help any way she can. Take care

Tom

Megan and L.C. are absolutely great!  Really rolling out the red carpet. Anything we ask for is provided.  I washed the bus today and so then went down to the depot to refill my tank and take some pictures.  Almost caused a riot and traffic jam with dozens of people stopping to ask questions and take pictures.  L.C. has really promoted this event.  All the T.V. stations are coming out from Memphis and even a TV helicopter will be filming.  Can you believe it?  Never seen interest like this over buses.  Great parking with all the closed off streets.  You guys that can't make it are going to be sorry.

RJ, Rick and anyone helpful,

As you all are taking in the magnificant site of this weekend. Would someone bother the 4104 owners and see I that crazy guy online (Me) have hit them up for their buses serial number yet. This year I have run into a lot of folks getting touchy about VIN number. Now I am using serial number (same thing, go figure).

Thanks in advance.

Wish I could have gone, but got to make time/pay for all those furlough days this year.

Mike, it looks like you are not registered.  We will make sure you get parked in the general area, but we need to give priority to the registered buses.  If you arrive on Wednesday or early Thursday, be sure to stop at the staging area.

There is not anything to bring.  There is at least one catered meal and there might be enough "overage" to handle a very small number of non-registered folks.  If we do, I will let you settle up with Tom when you get here.

Hi all,

We made it to Blytheville yesterday afternoon and it was already looking like a Great rally!  With all of the antique GM, Flex, Eagle and MCI the area around the depot looks like a slice of early Americana. I have to say that this event is very well organized and the town has pulled out all the stops. We met LC the local event organizer and he was enthusiastic about things so far. We haven't met Tom McNally yet, but kudos to him for setting this up!

I've got to put a plug in for Jim Shepherd who, it appears, is handling most of the bus parking logistics and he is doing a fantastic job!  The really old iron is clustered around the depot and the more current rigs are very close by.

Wendy is covering the rally for Bus Conversions Magazine and there will be pics posted on our blog. If you haven't subscribed to BCM, now would be a good time as there will be lots of coverage in the months to come.

Regards,
Jim

JL Vickers & I arrived a few minutes ago in his 4905, but we're holed up at the Holiday Inn right now because we forgot our rain boots to accomodate the heavy rain that's falling at the moment.

Talked to a Mr John Nelson of BPD, who was extremely cordial, and even got a complete tour of the coach - big grin on his face the whole time!  He's pretty impressed with what's going on, and told us that BPD got internal memos about the event and are thoroughly focused on customer service for us.  Very cool to have PD backing for a bus rally!!

Headed over to the bus staging area in about an hour, will follow up with pics tonight.

I was wondering since I can't do much walking (on crutches), and will be staying in my camper shell, will I be able to drive up to where the buses are parked?

Scott -

Come on down!  I'm sure there'll be a place you can park close by the main activity.  Bring your camera, too!

Weather's clearing up, supposed to be sunny & low 70's the rest of the week.

Ballpark, there's roughly 45 - 50 buses in/around downtown, possibly more tomorrow.

A group of folk are off to see Graceland tomorrow morning, so things will be quiet until they return after lunch, but you'll still be able to wander around, take pics and chat.

Jim, thanks for the kind words on the parking effort.  It was a logistical "challenge" but everyone was very cooperative.

Also, the city was great about working with the merchants to achieve a workable parking map.  Everyone is within a block or so of the terminal and the merchants can still function.

I am sure that a couple of folks would rather have better places.  If they read this, I will try to relocate them after we get back from Graceland.

Also, thanks for the mention in your blog and the wonderful pictures Wendy took

To bad the old Greyhound station on route 66 was leveled by the city if left standing along with the old El Garces Hotel and train station they are trying to save that would have been a neat sight with all the old buses

? is the older guy attending with his Greyhound Flxible bus from Iowa or Neb neat old bus

Scott -

Don't know exact address, but it's basically on the corner of 5th & Walnut downtown.

Take Exit 67 off I-55.  Don't turn towards the Walmart, head the opposite way towards downtown.  About .3 of a mile, follow the 0ne-way signs onto Walnut, and a few blocks later, you'll see all the buses.

There are about 45 or so parked around the depot - bring your camera.

Bright sunshine today, heading for a high of 66 or so.

There are some pics posted on Fliker, link is in the post above by Wendy.

Come on down!!

I agree with ya Cliff, I think those old Flx's have a serious cool factor about them, especially when they are converted with the exterior kept as original as possible. I can see myself owning one of them with an old hot rod as a toad done to match.

If anyone sees an old MC-6 at the rally, please take a picture of it. I sure wish I could have been there!

I spoke to some of my Eagle buddies and they felt that the parade should feature vintage Greyhound or Trailways buses.  There were some of those including a beautiful ex Mt. Hood Stages 4104 in Trailways livery.  But no seated GHL or Twys painted Eagles.  Personally I think they should of went, there were some beautiful Eagles there.  One of the home boys kept pecking on the promoters to let him put his S&S in the exhibit and  parade, what a whacko.

Ok, i must apologize for my silence for the last few days! I just recently yarded out my generator and haven't replaced it yet so unless we are plugged in to power we are running off of our house batteries and solar panels. The first couple of days at the rally there was no sun so we had to be frugal with what we ran on the bus, so no computer!  I also traded in my aircard for a MiFi and just got it going yesterday after we went to an rv park for the nite. Today we are in a park that we can't get a verizon signal for the MiFi so i am using the parks WiFi right now. :)  As for pictures, what i have can't compete with what is already online, good job done by those folks!!!!  Today as we were leaving the area i was trying to pin down what made this rally different from any of the other rallies that we have ever gone to, all of which were great,......but this one had something extra to it. I think that the only way i can describe it is to say that it had a "Cool" factor to it.  The buses were great, the owners were great, the townspeople were great, and the depot was great......it all added up to a once in a lifetime event and i wish to thank Tom McNally for coming up with the idea, the town of Blytheville for going all out to make it happen, to Tom, LC, and Megan for all of the work they did to make it work, and to everyone else involved.  Jim Shepherd did a great job of placing groups of buses together in an area that had some restrictions on where we could park. As you can see in some of the photos we were scattered all around the depot due to the layout of the streets and businesses in the area.  All in all, it was a great time and i wish more of you could have been there to share it with us.

Amen to what Ed said!!

I'm sitting @ DFW, waiting to board my flight back to Fresburg, after yesterday's run with JL Vickers in his 4905 back to Palestine, TX.

We spent virtually the entire 10 hr drive talking about exactly what Ed covered so succinctly.

I've got over 100 pics and six videos I'm going to sort thru and post after I get home, probably tomorrow.

Stay tuned!

 ;)

Clifford so far I am dissapointed, best has been 8.00.  Only about 1,400 miles on it so far.  Going to take some time to break in and get her power.  Zero oil consumption so far, sure nice to drive though.  Wayne and I are sitting in Salina waiting to see what the big snow storm is going to give us.  Supposed to have a low of 9 degrees in Grand Island, NE.  Right in my path home wouldn't you know it.

Ed and I lucked out, we were the first two buses to hit Blytheville last Sunday so we got the benefit of some free meals and tours courtesy of L.C., the guy in charge.  One highlight was our trip to Graceland in two Scenicruisers, a GHL 4104 and a '68 Flxliner.  That must have looked cool going down the freeway.  Never had a town roll out the red carpet for buses like this one.  I think you will see other gatherings there in the near future.  Lots of very professional pictures were taken under the neon and should be hitting the airwaves soon.

All

Thanks so much for the compliments about Blytheville. I had great help from the city, and Jim Shepherd, and many others. We had an excellant time. The town folk really rolled out the red carpet. What a blast. Returned home last night about 11 pm. Had a three hour (unscheduled) lay-over waiting for mobile tire repair truck to return to his shop off I-55, about 50 miles south of St. Louis. We had a blowout on the inside tag axle dual on my Scenic. No biggie. Lucked-out. did not touch the bags. Here are a five videos I ran across (below) on Youtube (shot by my buddy Paul Von Fange of Minneapolis. Thanks to all who made the effort to attend, and to those that helped promote the idea. I will post more photo/video links as I hear of them.

Tom, YOU ARE THE MAN.  Glad we finally got to meet in person.  Great job.  Now relax, you earned it.  Really wonderful job  on the book too!  Evanston in 2015?  But hey, couldn't you make it slightly later in the year?  Waiting out a snow storm and I wanna go home, lol.

Thanks Boomer. It was GREAT to meet you, Stan, and all the others. We'll have to see how Evansville (Indiana) does with their project. LC., Megan, Toybe & the gang will be hard to beat. They poured their hearts into this deal. They already want to do it again. I spoke to several older Blytheville natives during the band performance Sat. night, who really seemed to get a shot of local pride from you all taking over their little old town for the weekend. It was really cool to see all the locals get excited about their hometown again. I hope there are less questions now, as to why the town spent so much coin on restoring an old bus terminal. The fact that you guys were willing to make huge investments (fuel, time, lodging, food, airfare, etc) to spend time in their bus station proves that they really have a gem. It is an amazingly powerful little building! It makes us bus dudes do funny things!

The unsung hero of the parking effort was Ed Hackenbruch.  Ed and Stevi stayed an extra night at the staging area to catch folks who came in late.  He also kept folks informed as to how the parking effort was taking place.  I think he calmed a few folks down who were very anxious to get downtown.  Thanks Ed.

I also have to say how much I appreciated everyone being so patient during the process.

Tom, I can't express enough how I appreciate your putting this rally together.

I have been to many rallies (all but one of the BCM events, at least two of the Arcadia rallies, lots of Eagles International rallies, and a bunch more) and I have never experienced the "arua" or "atmosphere" of this rally.  The city, the buses, the people, the citizens, etc all made it very special.

The Eagle folks were sitting around BS'n and said that several citizens walked up and thanked them for being there.

If you ever consider hosting this rally again, please be sure to ask for help.  It is sad when you worked so hard and then missed a lot of the fun.

We really appreciate what you did!!!!

Jim

Thank You Tom for a first class rally. It was a pleasure to see all the classic busses and meet more nice bus people. The only challenge we have is getting home. In kansas now between severe storms on one side and blizzards on the other.

Evansville In Greyhound.   Was transferred to Indiana Landmarks Commission In Late March 2013. No determination as to future plans.  Lots of guesses ;the asbestos ? etc. Evansville has the casino and a great riverfront within walking distance of the station. The four lane drive on the river front gets closed for car shows etc.  I feel I missed THE GREAT ONE!!!!! last minute! taking Tama-flu-- Did not want to bring that present to the get together. The station in Evansville still stands.  Is clean in outward appearance and in a thriving part of the old Downtown.  Bob

Clifford, they chose a sweet spot to wait it out. Salina should be right between the storms. Brilliant location, because they might get a little snow tomorrow morning (my bet is none to not much) and very little rain. The severe stuff usually slides Northeast below Salina. Not to mention I doubt that we will have anything of real importance this go around. Not enough sun today and they are saying that anything would be later tonight. Our severe stuff is usually mid to late afternoon after it has been sunny.

You guys enjoy your stay. Not much to do there, except for the zoo ;D. Actually that Central Power out there is where we go if we need any good/real work done our engine or tranny. We usually try to avoid the KC Central Power.

Loved the video! Hopefully we can join one of these one day. Love those Scenicruisers!

Whose Flxible Flxliner was that at the 3:09-3:36?

The '68 Flxliner is part of my friend Stan Holter's historic fleet out of Richfield, MN.  They own 2 bus companies and about 60 vintage buses, many of which have been restored.

We also had a great time at the rally. OR vintage bus tour as it was billed. Tom did an awsome job. Next time more of us need to step up to offer a smal bit of time to takea load off Tom's back. Anne thinks he will go home and have a much deserved nervous break down. I said He would just rub some used DD oil on the ruff spots and he will be OK.
I did not have much time to sit and talk with our Eagle friends. I was busy giving house tours to both locals and other bus fans.
What got me was how many folks came from great distances to be there without a bus. Some had a bus in some stage of broke or just not ready others were just big bus fans. Spoke to one guy from Australia and IF I understood him correctly he flew in just for the event.
We made it to The Landing which is our little acre of earth just north of Wichita,KS. Sure missing Tucson right now. We did leave AZ early to be at The Rally
Just had the temps drop from mid-70s to 60 with wind and rain. Sure is pretty this time of year with all the blooming trees showing off.

I have not seen this mentioned, but some pictures reminded me.

The Greyhound terminal was empty before the rally.  Tom brought all of the displays.  There may have been others, but I saw Tom and his friends unloading a lot of stuff.

Another reason to thank Tom for an unbelievable and amazing rally.
