Title: How long between first oil change?
Post by: jmblake on April 29, 2013, 06:17:50 PM
Some of you might know from the other board that I just replaced my 8V71 with a 8V71 Turbo and we gave it a total rebuild. I forgot to ask my mechanic how long to run for the first oil change, So I figured I would ask the experts on hear first. Thanks Jason

10,000 miles is a good number Jason just pull a sample at 5,000 miles that will give you a idea of what the wear if any is going to be,  you don't want to change the oil too soon on a rebuild and I find 10,000 miles works good

good luck

Thanks Cliff, That might be a couple years till I get to put 10,000 miles on though, I mostly change it once a year witch is about 5000 mile. Jason

Clifford. I want to learn here. Why don't you want to change the oil too soon on a rebuild? Will the engine get used to close oil changes? (I am kidding on that).

Expiring minds want to know....

John, you need time for things per say to settle in you change it too soon samples don't do you much good and the old 2 strokes take a while for the rings to seat especially the 71 series  and they do it best with older oil not the fresh oil every 3 or 4 thousand miles

Some 71 series will use a gal every 600 miles after a rebuild some won't use a gal every 3000 miles depends on the liner and piston kits manufacture plus the assembly guy Jason can tell where he is at 10,000 or over it won't happen in 5000 miles, very seldom do you see one fail after the first 300 miles

I was told the same thing when I had my ZF rebuilt. That it was best to run it 10,000 miles and change the oil. I made a road trip that year to Jack Conrad's in FL for New Years just for the miles. It seemed like a good excuse for getting out and driving.

When we sell a new Freightliner, we want the customer in for the first oil change at 5,000 miles. This allows the left over gunk from machining to fall to the oil pan and lets us fix those first nagging problem most every new truck has.

Considering that I change my oil at 5,000 miles and it is pretty thickly carboned up (rub some oil between your fingers when you first change the oil, then everytime you check the oil-from the dip stick. About the time when the black is so thick you can't easily rub it down to see the color of your skin, it is time to change it. On mine, that's around 5,000miles-and I have a turbo engine.) I wouldn't run a 2 stroke more then 10,000 miles between changes. Now the new DD engines from Detroit have an over the road oil change rating of 50,000 miles. Good Luck, TomC
