Title: Honda EU3000IS auto start from inverter panel
Post by: Oregonconversion on December 17, 2013, 08:51:28 PM
I have the xantrex RV3012 inverter and I am STILL looking for a generator. All I really need is 2500 watts but I want the inverter to auto start up the generator and charge the batteries then shut it off.  Has anyone done this?

I know there is an auto start kit you can buy that comes with an auto choke. I know I will need the auto choke for sure.

I just want to make sure its possible before I buy the generator.

BAM!

Ok, but how would the inverter trigger that?

Auto start of a gasoline engine used for generator use is nearly impossible to have a smooth system.
Reasons are;
1-How much choke is required warm days and cold days?
2-Usually if the engine startsit can not take much load with the choke on to some degree.
3-Gasoline powered engines used on generators are fine if you start manually and wait until it warms up enough to get choke fully off, then apply the load.
4-None of this makes a happy auto start setup.
5-Other than being real cheap, WHY a gasoline powered unit.  Gasoline is by far the poorest fuel for a happy generator.  Go LP Gas or Diesel, you will be a happier camper for sure.
6-Gasoline will use twice as many gal of fuel than the same size diesel.

Thanks Dave, I'll keep that in mind.

I have a 3000is Honda and the exhaust is a major problem!!!!!!
I bought an APU by Rig Master, it has an auto start, used units $1500-3000.
    They are
a 2cyl. 500cc diesel, the engines are built in Japan with Perkins name on it.

Hello All.  I installed a Yamaha EF3000iSEB genny in an enclosed box below my bus.  The genny had a manual choke which I replaced with a solonoid operated choke run through a thermocouple (to detect eng temp) and a relay.  Although this isn't an auto start it sure would lend itself to such a system.  So far this has been no problem and I get instant start and no smoke or backfires with just the flip of one switch.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Oltrunt,

Did you make your own exhaust pipe? If so what did you use?

Hey Oregon,  Yes I did make a new exhaust system.  I simply could not push enough air through the genny box to keep the oil temp in the genny below 200 degrees F without moving the muffler out of the box.  The exhaust port at the cyl head called for 5/8" pipe so I made up a little head pipe from steel pipe and clamp connected flex pipe (from Mc Masters and Carr) to that.  I routed the flex through 1 1/2" exhaust pipe from the genny box to the oposite side of the frame where I connected the flex to the original muffler.  I then used thin wall 5/8" steel tube as an exhaust pipe to the rear of the bus (about 10')--much cooler and even quieter.

As an aside, I had mounted the genny on half a dozen valve springs to help dampen the genny vibration.  This works good except when the genny first starts.  Upon start up the genny "jumps around" a bit until it is completly lit.  This caused the flex pipe to strile the exhaust tubing which made quite a racket.  I solved the problem by wrapping the flex pipe in high temp silicone radiator hose  and stuffing it back into the exhaust pipe material.  Problem solved.  I selected mild steel flex but I'm sure that stainless steel would last much longer.  Jack

Does your inverter have a generator auto start mode?  If it does it should start the generator no problem . The hondas start good in all kinds of weather. I have a xantrax 2412 and a honda ei 5000. it starts the generator no problem. I can manually start it from the panel, have it start from low battery voltage or set the load amps to start it. can also build a delay into the start up time.  I love it! it works seamlessly .

cheers Gerry.

Gerry, I was going to look at your Honda ei 5000 on line, as I'm not familiar with that model.  Can't find a reference.  Is this a typo?

I have the Yamaha 3000 as well, thanks for the tip about remote mounting the muffler.  I carry mine in the AC condenser bay but it gets way too hot even in there.  Anyway, there is a factory remote start kit for it.  Uses a radio remote key fob, as I recall.

Honda doesn't seem to make an EU5000.  Are you sure it isn't an EM 5000, or an EU6500 which is actually 5,000 watts continuous?
