I had always assumed that the busted knuckles came from slipping wrenches and the like, but now I wonder if they might have been from barroom fights.  This tit for tat (which never seemed like a fair trade to me even though I don't know what a "tat" is) is just too petty.

My favorites are contranyms-- words that can mean their opposite depending on use.

Example: with- In "Obama debated with McCain," the word with means against.  In "Obama ran with Biden," the word with means together.
