   Awhile back I posted a problem that I had, ("fuel in the oil ") Well, a friend of mine who has a 8V-71 has the same problem.

  After spending thousands of dollars to find my problem, at the local Detroit shop we both decided to and how to find it.

  You wouldn't believe what we did to find it.  I hope this will help if you ever have this problem.  First thing I did, 

   Call back to the Detroit shop, ask to speak to a tech, told him the problem, Here is what he told me to do.  Remove

   both valuve covers, disconnect the return fuel line in one of the heads, and loosen the same line that runs back to the tank

  and put a plug in it.  Put a nipple in where you removed the fuel line in the head, Take an air compressor and connect it to the

  nipple and be sure not to exceed 20 PSI, and listen for the HISSING SOUND!   I was in SHOCK!,  neither one of us knows

 NOTHING about Diesels engines.  We removed the Broken Crossover line and installed a new one ($7.95)  F

  Sorry I hit the post button be for I finished.  I can't believe the money that I spent at that shop to fix mine, when I probably

  could have fixed the problem the same way!    Thanks for reading!

Take an air compressor and connect it to the nipple and be sure not to exceed 20 PSI, and listen for the HISSING SOUND! 
 

A bicycle tire pump will work.

When you hear the hissing, take a spray bottle filled with 1 part dish soap to 8 parts water and hit where you think the sound is coming from.  If you see bubbles, that's the spot -- might be a connection which can be tightened, or it might be a worn line which has to be replaced.

Is this a crossover line between the two cyl banks?

The reason I ask is that I have a 671 and assume that it has no crossover line. I hope this is correct so that I never have this problem!

However, it is good information either way. This is the kind of stuff that makes this forum so good.

Injector jumper lines are very torque sensitive guys. Don't wring them up 'til your eyes bug out then give them another half turn!  Any time you remove any inspect the seats (the flared portion) and if they show any wear...replace 'em!

by cross over line, I think the poster means the copper fuel jumpers to and from the injectors from the ports in the head. Yes, you have those on your 6-71. two for each injector, supply and return.

  Hey Guys,

  I did forget  to mention that it was the cross over line and what we found that it had broken off at the flared end. I thought

  about the soap and water but I didn't want to put any in the engine.  However it would work, because we had to change the oil

  anyway.  This goes to show as formentioned in my first post if you don't know about Diesels engines(like me) you can really

 be taken for a ride!
