Did 4905A buses have a fuel gauge ? Mine does not, and I don't see a sending unit on the fuel tank. Any ideas on putting one on it ? Thanks, Bill.

The fuel gauge was a option for the GMC 4905's.
There were two types from GMC one on the drivers instrument panel.
The other was located at the fuel fill area behind the fuel service door with a momentary on switch to read the fuel quantity inside the tank.
I guess that there might be a aftermarket fuel gauge for your 4905 but I am not aware of who might sell them.

Thanks for the info, I felt a little silly asking about the location of the fuel gauge, I guess I'll just make some kind of stick to check it.

If you will look on the floor above the fuel tank[inside] next to the side, you will find a plate that will expose your fuel tank where the sending unit installs,if it hasn't been covered. A universal gauge will work just fine in there and run a wire to the dash  and put a gauge in where it normally goes.  Make sure of the voltage, mine is 24v.. Oh open the fuel door and look at the floor and you will be able to see where the hole is.

The trap door in the floor has been covered. I'm seeing two round parts on top of the tank. I'm guessing that the one thats incorporated into the filler neck is the whisle and the other one is where the sending unit goes. It has a large foam type tube -a/c ? over it. It has a round neck facing forward, but I can't quite reach inside of it to know if it is just a cover, or a sending unit. Generally where the ones without gauges just sent though with a flat plate covering the sender hole in the tank ? I'm hoping its a sending unit already in place, but I don't want to wreck the ducting to find out that its not a sending unit.

 I have one of these gauges that I am not going to be using. It does not have the sending unit,just the gauge.It is made by ISSPRO,and it is still in the box.I will take $20.00 plus shipping,if that will benefit you.Those 4905's are the best bus to convert ,just let me know if I can help!

Bill,
   If you can shine a light in there and see the top of the plate, if it is a block off plate it will only have 5 screws the attach it to the tank (around the perimeter). If it is a sender it will have an insulated terminal for the gauge wire and a ground terminal, plus the 5 mounting screws.  Jack

I would guess that whether or not it was ordered with a fuel gauge that the wiring is in place anyway.

What I'm seeing looks like a sending unit. It's not just a flat plate. It's dome shaped with a round neck facing forward. I can't reach into it to feel if there are terminals for the wires or not. The a/c ducting feels like it is going to rip if I pull on it any more to get to the possible sending unit.

My 4905 has the same part on the top of the tank forward of the fuel fill neck and it's not a sending unit for a fuel gauge.
My thought it is a vent for the tank.
The maintenance manual and the parts manual does not have a illustration of this
 part. Cry

Well, I guess without a sender there isn't any sense in getting a guage, I'll just keep track of my mileage and go from there, thank you all for your help, Bill.

use a yard stick or a stick that will bend and you can put marks on.. hint: don't use a felt tip marker to make the marks.

The Greyhound PD4107's had a 165 gallon fuel tank's and the range in miles between refuel was 900 miles.
The Greyhound PD4106's had a 140 gallon fuel tank's and the range in miles between refuel was 800 miles.
So to be safe refuel your 4905 every 600 to 700 miles and you will be sure that way not to run out of fuel on a trip.

The fuel gauge on my 4905 is a length of rubber old garden hose. 

Put a long bolt (held by a worm clamp) into the end of the hose that goes to the bottom of the fuel tank.  I can hear the bolt tap the bottom of the tank when it hits bottom.  I keep meaning to try and figure out how many gallons 1" of fuel on the hose represents.......oh well, maybe one of these days when I run out of other projects on the bus.

Chris,
  How many gallons 1" represents?  The buffalo tanks are about 31" tall & come in 2 sizes, 165 gal and 140 gal.  If your tank goes all the way to the driver's side it's a 165 gallon, the 140 stops about a foot short of the left side.  4.5 gallons/ inch for the 140 gal tank & 5.3 gallons / inch for the 165.
