Okay. We are going to have a couple of days Rocky Mountain National Park. We will be their in about 4 or 5 weeks. (I know, we have to get the bus semi livable). We will be in Denver area, and then head out for a couple of days of fun. It is a little backwards, because usually we work, and then play, but this trip we will do a little work, play, and then a lot of work Grin.

So, my questions.

1. What are the best campgrounds near there, that will accommodate us in our 45' with no toad (we won't have the trailer then).

2. We like to hike. Any ideas on some good hikes, or whatever, that we can get the bus into, so we can park and hike. We have done fourteenrs, and enjoy them. Have you all tried any good "summitting" hikes? We like to keep those long days under 17 miles, but we can go further if it is a good climb (when we are doing that long a hike, we like less than a mile or two of rock fields).

Any ideas for us? I would be very grateful!

Thanks a lot.

God bless,

John

I wish I could say I have been there but I can't. I will await your report Grin Try this page and others for campsites and do what I do, use Google Earth to check topography.

17 mile hike, WOW that's pretty impressive to me. We have a couple of trail horses and thats a pretty full day for the wife and I to take the horses up to the Sierra's and ride 17 miles.

I envy you, hope you have a good time and find that trail your looking for.

John, unless the Estes Park area has changed it going to be a struggle to find camping for a 45 ft rig.
Email Wayne (Rusty) on the board here he lives at Johnstown CO and can provide first hand info on camping in that area.
John looks like the Eagle rally in Goodard Ks will take place about the same time you are in Co I was hoping you could stop by or attend our rally Sept 17-19 at Lake Afton

good luck

John, If you like fourteeners and are going to be in the park a good day hike is Longspeak. The trail head is just outside of Estes Park. It can be done in a long day. In 4 weeks it is not unusall to see a snow strom on the high peaks so be prepared. I am not sure of camping as we don't camp that close to home, but will do some checking and get back to you. Also in Colorado we have what is called the Colorado trail that goes from Denver to Durango. I have not hiked the trail but I am sure there are some pretty parts. That time of year should be pretty with the aspens turning. I have a full hookup at the house you are welcome to drop by and I can help you with some sights and things to see in the Estes Park area.

Enjoy Colorado Wayne

Thanks for the responses guys. We have some stuff to work with. As for parking at trailheads, we will just end talking with the rangers to see what we can do.

John4104 I didn't understand your post. Is woodall's a campground? Would they accommodate us, with our 45'r.

Sorry about not being able to come, Clifford. Actually this is the start of our trip, and we won't have much "fun" time on the trip. Sorry I will have to miss it.

Wayne, Thank you very much for your help. That was a kind offer about letting us stay at your place. We will talk it over. We usually do the Beauna Vista area, but we wanted to do Estes park this time. We have done a couple of fourteenrs there, and Long's peak would be nice. However, the problem is with parking. I am not sure how that would be....About the Colorado trail. We have liked that, and it is nice, but we do like to "get" somewhere Grin. That would be great if you happen to be able to check out a Cg or two, but don't inconvenience yourself.

Thanks a lot.

God bless,

John

I was there in 1986 with my brother and Sister-in-Law. We drove down from Cheyenne, WY when he was stationed there. The only two things worth mentioning that I can remember(Besides the scenery and oil-based recycling toilets) is the drive up the mountain was not easy even for a little Dodge Omni with a 2.2 liter and 5-speed stick. Also, there is a place not too far near Fort Collins, CO that we stopped by and looked pretty open it had a small lake/pond that people were boating on. Can you possibly rent a car for a day?

Doug,

A twelve passenger van goes for 150 a day. We are going to try to avoid that. I think that we can go up to the visitor center, and hike from there. We will call the rangers to see if we can get up to longs peak with the bus.

John, Without a car you will be a little bit limited. There is not a place to stay inside the park with your bus. There are 2 or 3 places to stay in Estes Park. You can drive your bus over Trail Ridge Road and there are trail heads all along that road but not shure if the parking area is big enough for your bus. Maybe the ranger will be able to answer that for you. The same with the parking at the trail head to Longs Peak I have not been there for a few years and don't remember what the parking or the road to the trail head are like. If you drive over Trail Ridge Road ( the highest continues paved road in the US ) when you get to the other side you will have to go to Granby to find a place to stay I don't think there is a place in Grand Lake. You will see some of the most beautiful sites in Colorado when you take that route.

Thanks for the info guys. Here is the update.

We now have reservations at the Cg http://www.essentialcoloradorv.com/elk-meadow/. We will have to decide if we try Long's Peak. If we do, then we will need to bring or serious gear. First we will call the rangers, and see what they say about parking. The parking would have to be really good, even though we would probably get there around 5:00am. We will see what we do, and how it goes. The more I read about Longs Peak, the more I want to do it Grin. But there are others in the group....

M&C, Can you tell us which full hookup for a 45'r are best? We will then call with that request. I just wondered if you knew which ones were better than the others.

Also about Longs peak. A big bummer. Right now I don't think that we will be able to take the bus up there. The information guy said, when I called that there wasn't a way to turn around. I looked at google maps, and wondered what you all thought. In looking at it, I think that we could back down that road that the ranger station is on. It looks like it is fairly straight, and also, and we could then park somewhere up there. What think you all? Should we try it? What about tree branches? I think that I might try calling a park ranger, and talking to one myself, not just the information guy. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=40.27215%C2%B0N++105.55682%C2%B0W&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.371289,79.013672&ie=UTF8&ll=40.274762,-105.557241&spn=0.007367,0.01929&t=h&z=16

Wayne, any input?

Thoughts?

Google on Devil's Head, Colorado. Not bus friendly getting to the park parking area, but a real good hike with a great view at the end of the trail.

M&C,

Thanks for the info. I just talked with a ranger, and he said that we should be able to get the bus up there. He said that the trees are trimmed and that we would be okay.

Why don't you guys try the hike? I think that you would enjoy it! I know that I would love it, but we have to see about some of the more "tender" ones in our group....

I just called the Cg, and talked with Ellis, I think. They have put us in row C I think that it is C6. She said that it is in the middle of the CG (as I could tell from the map online), but that those slots were 90 feet long. She said that it faces longs peak. That should be a nice spot. For some reason, M&C, she knew who you were Wink Grin.

John, I walked a whole 150'. "whew" Grin C-6 is a very nice site, 50amp with a 20amp on the side, pull thru, pretty level side to side & level front to back, pic tbl, close to lodge and laundry, fantastic views, driverside hook ups, cable. You will be about 50 yards form where the Elk come into the park to graze. I think you will enjoy this space. M&C
OH, weather is great. We had a partly cloudy morning, then 10 min of lite rain, now its blue sky and 70. Same tomorrow but a high of 62. Roll Eyes

Thanks a lot for the info, Michael. I hope you have time to recover from your exercise by the time you do your show tonight Grin. We will look forward to being there. It sounds like a great place.

I wish I wouldn't have asked about the weather. It makes me want to be there right now... Grin Cheesy Grin.

I am thinking that Longs Peak won't work this time, unless we leave the ladies somewhere. Sure would have been fun though. The problem with not having a toad, means everybody has to be the same place.
