Saw a fmca vendor. uses special pans to cook but has no apparent heat source. can some one jog my memory? Any one used it?   Bob

That would be induction cooktop. You need pans that a magnetic will stick to.

We have a 2 burner Fagor induction here in the house they are pricey for a 2 burner unit buy the separate single hob units and build it in

I have a two burner induction in the bus. It has a completely smooth top and is set in totally flush with the corian top and looks very good. we just use it for counter space when not cooking. Think it was 4-5 hundred bucks but its really fast and generates almost no heat.  Can get you more info and a pic if your interested.

Thanks Doug Judy's on line now. What brand did you use? They seem to be in line with the price of the electric smooth cook top I used in past.  Advantage will be no heat after use and therefore probably easier to keep clean. Bob

We LOVE our induction cooktop.

Those are sold by wattage Bob be careful and get enough wattage and the more the temp setting and wattage the better she will like it, like everything all the little upgrades will cost you lol ,

Then you can buy a new set of cookware seriously my wife loves the induction cooking pay close attention to the pattern on the top ones with a small pattern don't work as good as a large pattern I found out or so I was told

I got mine from Amazon, there are many of them on there.  I think this is the one I have but not positive, I have not been out to the bus yet.

If a magnet sticks and are flat bottom they work Bob just go to Bed Bath and Beyond with a magnet is all I can tell you if it sticks it works and cast iron works on one. FWIW  Sonja paid 2500 for cookware and I cannot tell the difference in taste lol

Clifford  got  cast iron: don't know why but has been collecting around here for awhile.  will experiment if not grab the magnet and go shopping.  Thanks for the tip.  By  the way hope your health gets better soon! I just now am getting better after 4 months and surgery myself. Sure feels better on the up side.  Best wishes to better health.   Bob

The biggest challenge I've had with cooking on induction is re-thinking how I approach putting together a meal.

In the past, I used to have time to start the heat going, get the oil heated or water boiling - and then assemble my ingredients as needed. 

However, because induction gets the heat up so quickly, I instead have to get whatever I'm going to be needing for phase one of my dish prepared, chopped, etc.  before I turn the heat on.    There's just simply not as much idle time, especially upfront.  Once its up to heat, it's pretty much the same tho.   Oh, and I love that the induction temperature changes are instantaneous, much like cooking on gas.

I've not tried it yet, but I hear that hard boiling eggs is challenging - because eggs need that extended heat ramp up time, which induction doesn't give.  I've seen tutorials and videos out there on the subject, but haven't gotten that far yet with researching it yet.

Cherie, I can even boil eggs lol heat the water till it boils turn it off when it stops bubbling drop the eggs in cover the pot and let set for 20 minutes perfect every time see and you thought I was just a pretty face.
Sonja showed me how to do that I would put the eggs in first and bring to a boil on the induction what a mess and they all cracked

Cherie,

Do another video but this time put a paper towel under the pot as you boil the water (I think I showed you that when you where here.). That's one of my favorite demos. Another point to make is that the hob is safer because it will not come on without a pot on it. Likewise if you take the pot off and forget to turn it off it senses that and shuts itself down in seconds.

Bob I took the RV gas range top out of our bus because of the heat generated and bought two portable induction cook tops. (I do most of our cooking outdoors and the cook-tops are only for rainy days. Everyone is right about the speed up and also down. If something is boiling (like sauce) you turn down the dial and instantly the sauce stops boiling and goes to a simmer. All with NO heat generated.

Go to any good kitchen store from Dillards to Bed Bath and Beyond and / or dedicated pots and pans stores and you will find triple layer (bottoms) stainless steel pans, that is what to use. cast iron will soak up too much of the heat.

Good luck, you will enjoy your new stove, and cooking again.

Still listening and learning.  Have units on the way. Pot and skillet  next.  prob 1 of each we have a electric skillet if we need a 2nd skillet.  Mostly two of us when we are eating in. Our longest trip is in the winter for 3 month run to the sun .   Bob

Do the induction cooktops cause any dangerous electrical interference or strong magnetic fields?  Could they cause trouble with pacemakers or hearing aids?

Bob,don't over invest in pots and pans induction is 1930 technology all the pots and pans they sell just for induction cooking were not around then cast iron works good try it before buying new.

She also has this little gadget named a interface disk that allows you to use any type cook ware on a induction cook top she very seldom uses it but she has it
 
Somethings I don't eat if not cooked in cast iron like potatoes you know the old country boy thing lol and she makes perfect eggs in the cast iron skillet adds a little butter adds about table spoon of water covers the skillet in 3 or 4 minutes you have eggs that look like the photo on menus.
 
 She has here nice cookware but we don't travel with much of it it stays home and you don't use it to test a thermostat I can tell you that one for sure

No interference that I know of. I wear two hearing aids and have never noticed a thing. The cook tops use magnetic impulses not microwave signals so they are not dangerous. The amazing thing is the lack of ambient heat in the coach. Just the perfect situation.

No interference that I know of. I wear two hearing aids and have never noticed a thing. The cook tops use magnetic impulses not microwave signals so they are not dangerous. The amazing thing is the lack of ambient heat in the coach. Just the perfect situation.

Those cook tops were 240v. Are you wiring for 240v? Will you be able to use these if you are not on pole?

Thanks for the info guys.  I don't think that Mom & Dad have any of those things but you never know what tomorrow will bring or who will stop in for a visit.  It's my brother Eric who is getting the new house and he is using my stove right now.  The toter does not have a cooktop so an induction unit might be a good fit there.

I'll stick to my good ol' propane stove and oven.  You don't have to worry about an electrical power source when using it-and it's dependable.  I have a Fantastic fan right over the stove with a ventless power hood-so the power hood blows the air out and the Fantastic fan sucks it up and out.  Never had a problem with heat-that's what A/C's are for. I like not having to fire up the generator everytime you have to cook-or if you're cooking with the inverter, charging the batteries sooner.
But-then again if you're all electric-this maybe a good way to go to save electricity versus a standard heating stove.  Good Luck, TomC

Rwc, you can split the 2 burners into 110V where they work like 2 portable hobs fwiw
