A local battery salvage yard is selling 8D batteries for a net $55.  They are take offs from CAT UPS gen sets, used to start the gen set on power outage and run diagnostic programs.  They are removed every 2 to 3 years as a preventative maintainence (sp) program.  I do not know how they will work, the yard claims people have good luck, that some batteries may have only be started 3 or 4 times.  I am hoping I didn't waste my $55, the batteries test ok.

Will see how the mop flops.

If I needed one, I would try it.  I am addicted to optimism.

My guess is that you probably have a 50/50 chance of getting a good one. Depends on how they were maintained. These things don't last very long anyway unless used daily.

A place in Fresno CA was selling one-year-old 8Ds that had been used by farmers for their irrigation pumps.   Maybe something like this could be another viable source of "previously-enjoyed" batteries.

Even well taken care of batteries have a finite life. Just factor that into your decision and hope for the best. Batteries start to die the minute they roll off of the assembly line. How fast they expire is up to us. I think we get six or eight years out of our generator batteries where I work and they are removed still working. After a few year we forget when the last time was they got swapped. It is in the records somewhere, but next time I am going to write it on the battery.

Apparently some places in the country are giving 50c a pound for them as scrap.. might not be a bad deal if you don't get a good one, you'll make money anyway...
