The manifold is going to be around 800 - 900 degrees, possibly hotter.  You could fabricate a simple heat shield out of aluminium sheet, but that would restrict air flow when you are running the generator.  My recommendation, and what I did in your situation with my Yamaha 3000 watt inverter generator, is put the generator in the AC condenser bay and slide/lift it out when you need to run it.

Dave,

Running a 3500w generator, supplying amps for an air conditioner, pulling fuel from 40 ft away, on 1.85 gal of gas for 9 hours - amazing!

The exhaust manifolds vary in heat according to rpms a 8v71 will be 850 degrees at 2100 rpm 175 degrees at idle sounds about right you may have a problem being that close to the manifold with the plastic parts in the carburetor

With my kipor 3500 watt running on auto throttle with my split a/c (max 9 amp ) will last 9 hrs on a tank of fuel ( built in tank ) .Most of the time it is at 1/2 throttle. basically I have two fan systems in the bay. One sucks air through the compartment to scavenge heat and carbon monoxide out. With the other, I actually fabricated an air plenum that is attached to the side of the generator itself. I attached a furnace blower (to be able to handle the heat) to that, and it's ducted through a foil dryer hose out of the compartment.

I'll post some pics if you're interested.
