You definitely need ALL the shroud or loose a good deal of cooling efficiency. I finally replaced/fabricated a small 8 inch long piece on front of shroud (previous person removed/discarded to make cooling fan removal easier) and it stopped getting too hot on long pulls. 6-71 turboed.Keep engine wound up  on long grades; no lugging. Accurate temp gage and tach. With clean rad, full shroud, and even larger injectors, 04's shouldn't have heating issues


Why shouldn't a 04 have overheating problems?

the stock horsepower engine or n-65 shouldn't haven't any cooling problems with a good condition cooling system. They overbuilt that model.

Any 4104 with a 6L-71 will overheat if lugged they run the coolest at about 1600 to 1700 rpm lot of heating problems can be controlled by the right foot  Shocked

Clifford sure is right on this one. My 06 gave me heating problems because the Vernatherm would not close. After I fixed that everything else worked perfectly. Watch the mirror and lift when you see any black smoke. If your rig won't stay at the desired speed, then down shift.I just came back to the Utah mountains from Clifford's which has many severe long grades and no heating problems at all.
