    I have a set of these.  One for the canister cap in the TDI in my VW and a larger one for the bus engine; the swivel at the pivot lets it work at any angle.   Works like a charm - I don't really need the swivel feature in the bus but it's necessary on the VW.  I think the set was about $22 but I saw them for less at either Harbor F or Northern Tool (one of the cheapo places).

Similar to what Dave uses. Had one identical to his until I ran into a large filter someone over torqued and the strap pulled from the tubing. The strap slides into a notch in the tubing and will pull out under too much pressure on large filters. If your using it only on filters you installed it would be fine

    Or you could take a worn-out or cracked deep socket (I'd look for a 3/8" drive) and grind two 1" long slots in it and find a strap from an old motorcycle tie down or an old belt.  Total price $0.00.

    Or... you could change back to the cannister with element and use a 3/4 inch socket with ratchet. Much cheaper elements, although can be messier job without drain in cannister. They also make a metal strap type thapretty compact. Those webbing type tend to slip if filter is oily; you know, like on a DDC 2 cycle.

I had one identical to Dave's too.  Thats why I am getting suggestions, so I dont have to break another one.

I got mine from Caterpillar years ago, you can get them lots of places now, I'll buy you a new one and a quart of your favorite bourbon if you can break it, removing a filter...Smiley

I have the strap type. Always able to get the filter off. It will crush the spin on filter, but you're throwing the filter away anyway. The main trick to getting a spin on filter off is not to tighten to tight in the first place. Just tighten with hand pressure, never use a filter wrench to tighten. Good Luck, TomC

says right on the bottom of the filter,"hand tighten + 1/8". But that is really misleading because everyone has a different grip!... Shocked

I usually use filter pliers, similar to channel locks but made specifically for filters. I also punch a hole in the bottom to drain the filter before spinning it off - less mess.

Always poke a hole.  Pliers wont work in my setup.

     And lightly oil both sides of the gasket and watch that it doesn't get pinched or pushed out of place.  It helps the filter go in smoothly and -- if the gasket is damaged -- it will spray oil like ... well, pretty much like most of the gasket faces on a DD 2-stroke ...

I find the strap type wrapped around the square tube that fits the 1/2" drive or use a 3/4" open wrench. That setup will remove most any filter as long as you use it correctly.
