Drywall screws come in fine thread for metal studs and coarse thread for wood studs, when being used for their original purpose. If you are working with the melamine coated particle board there are special screws made for that material.

I have been doing some fencing lately and I have been using a tan colored screw designed for outdoor projects. I am not sure if that is the type construction screw you are talking about, but they work great and hold well, but again because of their coarse thread you have to pre drill if you a re very close to an edge.

The construction screws I used were bought at Menards and are simply called construction screws.  They are not for outdoor use unless you want rust.
