I knew I should have bookmarked this link...but someone gave it to us recently and now I need it.
The poster stated that Dupli-color made a direct replacement for DD Alpine Green. and I need a case (6) cans, please.
Whoever made the post...would you be kind enough to point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
NCbob

It wasn't a link. It was posted on the BNO board and I think I may have been the one to post it. It may still be in the article but all it really said was that it was made by Dupli-color and and I found it at the local parts store. It came in a rattle can and looked exactly like the real thing. It even said Detroit Diesel on the cap.
I think it was Advance Auto parts (discount auto parts at the time) here in Florida that I got it from. You may check your local parts store as well!

Thanks, Ace, but I need the part # so I can order it. You have to understand that here in Podunk...they don't look things up..you have to supply the number! Not trying to be a hard a--...it's just the way things are in the mountains.

I went and found the original post.
Here it is:

Dana
Dupli-color makes a color just for DD's in a spray can called engine enamel ceramic good for up to 500 degrees and says's it's "dyno HEAT tested".
Color is: Detroit Diesel Alpine Green number DE1618
I got this at a local auto parts store off the shelf.
Hope this helps

Well, Ace, I certainly thank you for your efforts on my behalf. Advance doesn't have it in their matrix...Napa is disinterested but I still have Auto Zone to go.
With many thanks (I've now written the number down).......

Bob, I lifted this off the Detroit 2 Cycle Group: >>>>>> There were at least three shades of alpine green used by the factory over the years that I have found so far. Maybe Dan can tell us more.
The current official Detroit Alpine green in rattle cans is part # 05194974 unless they changed it recently. If you get it from a Detroit dealer they want $15 a can for it. But it is a little darker that the color on the engine on our front page. I actually like this shade the best but not enough to pay $15 for one spray can. I have tried to find a cheaper source for this exact shade of Alpine green but have not found it yet. Not all dealers sell the official paint. Maybe $15 a can is too embarrassing even for these horse theives. Some of them will sell you one of the aftermarket spray paints as if it is the factory stuff, so watch what you are buying if you are trying to match paint on an engine.
Here are some numbers for aftermarket spray cans. All of these are supposed to be official Detroit Alpine green but every one of them is a different color.
AERVOE ENGINE ENAMEL # 540 ALPINE GREEN
DURALUX SPRAY PAINT made by MARINE PAINT & VARNISH CO. NEW ORLEANS # D2967 ALPINE GREEN (this is a close match for the Alpine green on my unmolested 1962 3-71 genset)
Crown spray paint ALPINE GREEN (don't have a number on that one but they only made one shade)
Below are three RINSHED-MASON automotive paint numbers for Alpine Green. these are pretty old numbers. I never had any of these mixed so can't tell you much about them.
12461 called Detroit Green
75738 Alpine green
78683 New Alpine green
I was told that some time during the 1960s Buick used Alpine green as the factory color on their gas automotive engines. Which Alpine green it was I don't know. That one might be the Dupli Color one because I know Dupli Color makes mostly general automotive touch up colors.
Bottom line is, don't count on matching up any Alpine green with a rattle can. Buy enough to do the whole engine. Every damn one of them is different.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I hope it helps. Dallas

Bob, I don't know about all those other numbers Dallas posted but I can tell you first hand that the green I got from a rattle can with the part number number I listed matched perfectly to what was already on the 318 DD I had. There were places I couldn't get to and you couldn't tell it wasn't painted.

Be careful of that Detroit Green Paint. You do know that if you take a solid block of metal and paint it Detroit Green, it will leak oil!

Hey Cliff....that was so easy I managed to perform that little chore even before I had my first cup of coffee of the morning! M'friend You get a Gold Star right in the middle of your forehead and go to the head of the Class! Thank you for the lead. Some of you fellas must have reams of information all collated and waiting to be dispensed to the dummies like me who can't tie their own shoes without help!
