Daniel Odio Left my place a couple hours ago and he just called saying the engine has shut Down Twice.

He discovered the coolent level was somewhat low and filled with water.

He then traveled 5 mi's and shut down again, coolent still full but lighter in color.

He has a Cummins, He's not sure which model.

Any help with a solution would be appreciated!!!!!

Bryce,

It's an 88'  and he has stripped all the guages and added a computer screen for all his read outs, but not sure if he has them all up and running.

I know he has no temp reading as of yet!

Ohh, That makes it more difficult, ahh lets see an '88 may or may not be computer controled, I wonder if he's got an air bubble at the low coolant sensor? Also I wonder if it has temp shut downs like a DD ? If so he could try temperarily disconnect them, but I wouldn't wanna run it long with out 'em does he have a temp gauge of any kind ? See if you can find out which model V H it is and which engine too, I can't make no guarantees but I'll make a call if I can get the answers to the first questions he's gonna ask, he may have an idea or maybe not! But we'll try. BK

Well I'm not positive but if it has a throttle cable it should be a mechanical pump and as long as he knows it's not overheating, if I remember correctly on a cummins mechanicla fuel pump there is a screw that you can turn in and it locks the pump on so the engine will not shut down unless the screw is backed out or by dumping the clutch! I know this is not the proper fix but it should get him somewhere safely off the road and at a place where we can see what find out why it's shutting down ! BK

Hello BK,

Nick-

That's very likely, also if for some reason the soleniod that shuts fuel off to the injector pump loses voltage(I don't remember them, but there are several causes) the fuel will shut off and cause it to quit. That is why we used to run the screw in on the pump when this would happen and could still truck on coast to coast with out it shutting down anymore (not the cure, but it got us to where we could find the problem and cure it! Or get the "load off", then make it to the shop since most of our loads were perishables).
Does he have a oil pressure guage, and a temp gauge hooked up at all ?
It certainly won't hurt to change those filters, but I'm still wondering if there's something else. BK
